What You'll Do
The Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) at the University of Michigan is seeking a Product Manager for our Data and Business Intelligence (BI) team, responsible for driving outcomes that strengthen educational experiences. In this newly created role, you will expand our Data, BI, and AI/ML capabilities to support innovative educational solutions, the Michigan Online platform and CAI internal operations. You will lead the development and adoption of data products-such as dashboards, predictive models, decision-support tools, self-service environments, and metadata repositories-that empower learners, educators, and internal stakeholders across CAI. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and reporting to CAI's Director of Data and Business Intelligence, you will shape the product roadmap, collaborate across teams, and align our work with both near-term priorities and long-term vision. The Data and Business Intelligence Team within the Center for Academic Innovation (CAI) at the University of Michigan drives CAI's data strategy, ensuring that data is used responsibly, ethically, and securely. Our team of data engineers, scientists, and analysts powers internal operations and the Michigan Online platform by leveraging data as our universal language for analytics, insights and decision-making. We strive to democratize access to data while upholding strong standards for governance, security, and privacy. Responsibilities*
+ **Product Discovery & Strategy**
+ Develop and align the Data, BI, and AI/ML product strategy with organizational goals and stakeholder priorities.
+ Identify opportunities and propose data-driven solutions to address business challenges and enhance product evolution.
+ Conduct user research to understand data needs and translate business problems into clear product requirements.
+ Establish success metrics and track outcomes for data products across the organization.
+ **Process Improvement and Excellence**
+ Manage data product lifecycle from problem identification through scaled adoption and streamline the development processes to create scalable, repeatable workflows.
+ Ensure compliance with privacy regulations (FERPA, GDPR) and security standards.
+ Build self-service capabilities that democratize data access while maintaining governance.
+ Contribute to goal-setting in the Data and BI domain and mentor early-career team members to foster a culture of innovation and excellence in product management across CAI.
+ **Product Validation and Quality Assurance**
+ Conduct QA reviews of data products, dashboards, and integrations to ensure accuracy, reliability, and usability.
+ Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and stakeholders to validate requirements and ensure alignment with use cases.
+ Define quality standards, acceptance criteria, and governance frameworks for data products.
+ Identify and resolve defects or gaps before product rollout, embedding QA practices into the product lifecycle.
+ **Collaboration and Community Engagement**
+ Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to bridge technical and non-technical stakeholders.
+ Collaborate with internal teams to deliver cohesive data solutions and foster positive stakeholder engagement.
+ Partner with Michigan Online squads on analytics, experimentation, and personalization needs.
+ Manage data product delivery from ideation to adoptive, overseeing scope, timelines, and dependencies.
+ Prioritize and manage product backlogs using agile methodologies for efficient execution.
+ Co-host a BI + AI Community of Practice to promote collaboration among data practitioners campus-wide.
+ Organize monthly Data Hours to showcase new features, provide training, and troubleshoot issues.
Required Qualifications*
+ Bachelor's degree is required and a degree in Business, Information Systems, or a related field is a plus.
+ 5+ years of experience and progressive responsibility in product management, technical consulting, or similar roles.
+ Product Management Expertise: Deep understanding of product management methodologies, including agile practices, backlog management, and prioritization. Previous Product Manager experience at a product company is a plus.
+ Technical Foundations: Foundational understanding of data infrastructure, BI tools, AI/ML concepts, and platforms like salesforce.com. Hands-on fluency with these concepts and platforms is a plus.
+ Data Governance and Security: Prior experience establishing scalable data governance practices and ensuring compliance with data privacy and security standards (e.g., FERPA, GDPR).
+ User-Centric Skills: Proven ability to develop deep understanding of user needs and translate business problems into technical requirements.
+ Communication Skills: Demonstrated capability to bridge technical and non-technical audiences, conveying complex concepts with clarity.
+ Delivery and Strategy: Experience driving delivery of data products from ideation to adoption, managing scope and timelines, and planning user enablement strategies.
+ Analytical & Problem-Solving Aptitude: Strong skills in identifying opportunities, anticipating challenges, and proposing data solutions; experience with tools for data analysis and reporting like Tableau and Looker is preferred.
+ Project Management & Organizational Skills: Ability to independently manage projects and handle multiple tasks, including collaboration across teams using enterprise tools like Asana. In this highly cross-functional role, you will collaborate with stakeholders across CAI's operational, online learning, technology and marketing domains, and act as a translator between data teams and functional units. Product Manager and/or Agile Product Owner certifications are a plus.
+ Knowledge Sharing: Experience in organizing communities of practice, hosting events, or facilitating knowledge-sharing sessions, with the ability to foster collaboration across diverse stakeholders.
+ Industry Interest: Familiarity with trends in Data, BI, AI/ML, and educational technology, coupled with a proactive, results-oriented mindset and eagerness to learn.
Modes of Work
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
Additional Information
The mode of work for this position is **Hybrid** with a minimum of 4 days in the office per week, Monday through Thursday, with an option of remote work on Fridays. On occasion, you may be required and must be available to work onsite on Fridays if necessitated by our center's policy and domain leadership or by your job requirements.
Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
The salary for this position will be based upon the selected candidate's education and experience.

Salary Information
The general salary range for this position is $90,000 - $110,000. Candidates can expect to be paid a competitive and equitable salary. Factors used to determine salary include education level, experience, knowledge and skills for the position and salaries that are currently established within the unit. All candidates are encouraged to discuss salary questions to honor alignment and transparency throughout the recruiting process.
