The Patient Transporter (U) is responsible for safely, timely, and accurately transporting patients while providing the utmost positive experience. Provides the pivotal first and most lasting impressions while setting the tone that the key concept of patient transportation is the human element. This position reports to the Office of Patient Experience and is held to the highest standards of being friendly, empathic, knowledgeable, well-spoken, bilingual, and continuously consumer-oriented. The Patient Transporter harmonizes the patient transportation experience while working seamlessly with UHealth Tower staff to reduce unnecessary delays to help drive patient satisfaction.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS:
+ Transports patients and/or visitors from department/unit to department/unit and to and from ancillary areas to include admissions and discharge and remains attentive until their transportation arrives.
+ Transfers bodies to the morgue following appropriate protocols.
+ Meets productivity measures and benchmarks set by the hospital.
+ Assists at main lobby greeting patients and/or assisting with transport between assignments.
+ Identifies correct patient for transportation prior to movement by asking the patient for name and date of birth and comparing that against armband while maintaining patient confidentiality and patient privacy.
+ Practices good body mechanics when transferring and/or lifting patients.
+ Obtains and transports paperwork/chart with the patient.
+ Observes proper procedures and techniques during patient transport: monitors oxygen and intravenous apparatus and reports any problems or change in patient’s condition (difficulty breathing, complaints of discomfort, etc.) to nursing staff. Reports defective equipment to the appropriate manager for repair.
+ Keeps hallways clear by storing equipment in the appropriate storage areas and exercises caution when moving stretchers, wheelchairs, and equipment to prevent damage to hospital property.
+ Stays current with emergency management by participating in drills, in-service trainings, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans.
+ Adheres to precautionary methods for patients on precautions and uses personal protective equipment as necessary and defined on precaution cards located outside of patient room.
+ Exercises good hand-washing techniques and personal hygiene. Prepares, disinfects, and covers equipment appropriately.
+ Communicates effectively with patients, visitors, and staff and considerate of patient age, gender, culture, and stated preferences, while always maintaining patient privacy and respect. (Knock, introduce, and ask for permission before entering any patient room; provide patient a sheet for privacy and a blanket for comfort, etc.)
+ Responds promptly to requests, problems, and questions from physicians, staff, patients, and visitors. Notifies appropriate personnel upon arrival/departure of patient and/or miscellaneous items at unit/department while adhering to wearing a tracker.
+ Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS:
+ High school diploma or equivalent
+ BLS Certification
+ Minimum of six months’ experience as a courier in a hospital setting preferred
