    The Budget Planning & Operations (BPO) team, a department within the Finance and Budget Strategy (FBS) division of Finance, Planning and Budgeting (FPB) is responsible for leading the budget operations functions of the University, ensuring the annual budget planning processes and tools are well structured, efficient and supported, and the resulting adopted budget is accurately reflected, and monitored, in UW’s Workday ecosystem. By combining key functions such as budget operations, data management, and specialized planning consultative services to the community, BPO is expected to function as a service-oriented process partner and respond to the needs of executive leadership and campus units timely, well-coordinated and holistic ways.

    Reporting to the Vice President for Finance & Budget Strategy/Deputy CFO, the **_Director for University Budget Operations_** is responsible for:

    + Overseeing the execution of UW's budgetary operations

    + Supporting the university community learning and training needs as they pertain to the UW budget systems and processes

    + Utilizing data from the UW's ERP systems to analyze and answer complex business questions to support policy, decision-making, and improve processes

    + Providing professional-level support to Deans', Chancellors', and Vice Presidents'/Vice Provosts' offices related to resource allocation and implementation, along with other fiscal/budget-related questions and issues

     

    This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the University’s budget operations, including transactional processing, reporting, and adherence to policy. In this capacity, the Director provides leadership and oversight for critical financial functions and manages a team of professional staff who carry out these responsibilities. By guiding and supporting these essential operations, the Director plays a key role in sustaining the University’s fiscal health and enabling sound, transparent decision-making across the institution.

     

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Strategic Oversight of Budget Operations

    + Lead UW’s budget operations to ensure financial planning, resource allocation, and policy align with institutional priorities

    + Oversee the annual budget cycle and ongoing operations, providing accurate, transparent, and timely reporting to senior leadership

    + Guide UW’s use of _Workday Adaptive Planning_ as the enterprise system for planning and forecasting, driving strategic adoption and system optimization

    + Manage the central funding request process, ensuring transparency, accountability, and effective resource distribution

    + Partner with UW Medicine Finance and academic leaders to integrate clinical and academic budgets into UW’s enterprise financial system

    + Build budget literacy across the University by leading training and professional development in budget systems and best practices

    Continuous Improvement & Innovation

    + Champion improvements in budget systems, processes, and tools, incorporating feedback from stakeholders across UW

    + Drive innovation and efficiency through adoption of best practices that enhance transparency, responsiveness, and data-driven decision-making

    + Ensure clear and consistent process documentation for all aspects of the budget cycle

    Decision Support & Strategic Leadership

    + Provide analysis of budget allocations, revisions, and trends to inform executive decision-making

    + Develop and maintain clear budget policies aligned with UW’s strategic goals

    + Serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership on complex and sensitive financial issues

    Institutional Leadership Continuity

    + Ensure continuity of UW’s budget operations during executive absences

    + Contribute to broader FPB initiatives that support UW’s mission and long-term financial health

    Re** **quirements:

    + Bachelor's degree in business, accounting, finance, economics, public administration, or related field, and 6 + years of experience in financial planning, budgeting, or resource management in a large, complex organization or related field

    + **OR** Master’s degree in business administration, accounting, finance, public administration, and 4 years of experience

    + An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for a degree

    + 3 years of progressively responsible leadership/management experience; demonstrated commitment to developing others to become leaders

    + Experience directing and administering large-scale, complex financial or budget operations, including annual budget development, forecasting, systems, and reporting

    + Proven ability to work effectively in a highly decentralized and matrixed environment, balancing institutional priorities with unit-level needs

    + Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and provide actionable insights to inform executive decision-making

    + Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and convey complex financial concepts to diverse audiences; ability to communicate succinctly and effectively in written or verbal form, including a high level of comfort presenting to a wide array of audiences on complex budgetary topics

    + Must have an eye for detail and process improvement

    + Demonstrated experience in working with diverse groups, stakeholders, and teams; collaborative, inclusive, and service-oriented leadership style, and the ability to foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and teamwork

    + Experience leading system transitions or serving in a functional ownership role for enterprise financial or planning systems (e.g., Workday Adaptive Planning, ERP systems)

    Desired:

    + Experience with Adaptive Planning software

    + Experience in higher education planning and budgeting

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $125,244.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $194,160.00 annual
