    Your New Role...

CNN’s global Visuals team is seeking a Senior Weekend Data and Graphics Editor to help lead and shape our visual journalism. This role requires working two weekend days in addition to three weekdays. On weekends, you will often serve as the primary senior editor on duty, making strong communication skills, initiative and editorial judgment essential. In this position, you’ll anticipate coverage needs, edit and assign visual stories and collaborate across desks to deliver high-impact, data-driven storytelling. You’ll play a critical role in maintaining our standards of accuracy, creativity and clarity, while also helping to push our visual journalism into new and ambitious directions.

    Your Role Accountabilities...

+ Anticipate and prepare for breaking news coverage needs across a wide variety of scenarios.

+ Assign and edit graphics and visuals — including charts, maps, interactives, annotations and other formats — for both breaking news and medium- to long-term features.

+ Identify strong visual opportunities for data and graphics stories and features across other desks.

+ Edit data-driven stories, including both graphics and text, ensuring journalism-first execution.

+ Review data, analyses, news graphics, visualizations and interactive storytelling to ensure they meet rigorous editorial and design standards.

+ Collaborate with data and graphics teammates to refine workflows, share skills and strengthen our visual storytelling capacity.

+ Work across platforms and distribution teams to help frame and package visual and data-first stories for general audiences.

+ Lead large-scale projects in partnership with multiple teams and stakeholders.

+ Keep an organized budget of assignments and handovers for time zone coverage.

    Your Qualifications & Experience...

+ 7+ years of experience, ideally in a newsroom or comparable environment.

+ A proven ability to push storytelling forward, with impeccable news judgment and a journalism-first approach. You constantly ask: What’s the best way to tell this story?

+ A varsity-level communicator who is equally comfortable pitching to editors, editing stories and working side-by-side with colleagues on projects.

+ Comfortable working individually, collaboratively and cross-functionally.

+ A track record of bringing new ideas to the table.

+ Proven experience in data-driven reporting, visualization and creative storytelling (information graphics, interactives, webGL or similar formats).

+ Proficiency with mapping and geospatial visualization tools (QGIS, Mapbox, D3.js, ArcGIS or similar platforms).

+ Familiarity with automated data pipelines using tools such as Github Actions.

+ Ability to analyze, clean, and interpret datasets — including geospatial data and translate them into clear, accessible visuals.

+ Willingness to experiment with novel storytelling techniques and/or how graphics are designed for homepages and off-platform.

+ Technical fluency with modern visualization and data tools: Illustrator, ai2html, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (especially D3), R, Python, SQL, Excel, and Git/command line.

+ Curiosity and openness to experimenting with new storytelling formats (e.g.,storytelling, 3D visualizations, emerging technologies).

+ If you don’t have every one of these skills, that’s OK — we want to hear from candidates who are passionate about this work and eager to bring their unique vision and experience to the role
