Position Summary:
The House Officer (Lead Administrator) serves as the executive nursing presence during night operations, reporting directly to the CEO. This position ensures that patient care aligns with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and McLaren Oakland’s commitment to compassionate, connected care. The House Officer will be responsible for
serving as a rigorous steward of accountability
upholding standards with firmness, fairness, and consistency to ensure adherence to established procedures, staff professionalism, and operational excellence.
This highly visible leadership role acts as both a guardian of standards and a bridge between frontline caregivers and hospital administration, reinforcing a culture of responsibility, discipline, and clinical excellence. By combining supportive leadership with uncompromising expectations, the House Officer ensures safe, high-quality care delivery and an exceptional patient experience during off-hours.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Operations
* The primary role of the House Officer is to ensure quality and efficiency in the Patient Care Service units, on a shift-to-shift basis.
* Monitor and modify patient flow within the departments to maximize efficiency, maintain quality, and promote patient satisfaction.
* Function as the liaison between the Nursing units, all in house nursing units and ancillary departments.
* Adjust and allocate nursing assignments to meet the needs of the department.
* Ensure the reporting, handling, and documentation of all patient incidents, variances in patient care, issues related to substandard quality of care, safety issues, and actual or potential litigation or media situations, occurring during their shift.
* Keep management and staff informed of work-related matters on a regular basis.
* Guide and mentor staff in daily activities of decision making for patient care, bed access and family dynamics.
* Assumes daily functioning of the Patient Care Service areas in accordance with hospital and nursing policies, procedures and standards.
* Plans, implements, coordinates and evaluates staffing and patient care. Initiates and/or participates in corrective action process and personal development plan.
Clinical
* Function as a role model and mentor to all staff.
* Assist with all aspects of patient care on an as-needed basis.
* Knowledgeable with all equipment, supplies, forms and procedures utilized on the nursing units (or unit specific, as applicable) to ensure the ability to support staff with questions and assist in resolving related issues.
Customer Service
* The Supervisor will be constantly aware of who our customers are: patients, patient families, physicians and anyone requiring the services of McLaren Oakland.
* The Supervisor will ensure quality customer service.
* The Supervisor is empowered and encouraged to address and rectify customer concerns at the time of occurrence in a manner that is acceptable to the customer and the hospital.
* The Supervisor will be knowledgeable with community resources and referral agencies for customers in need of shelter, food, medications, and follow-up medical care.
(May be unit specific, as appropriate).
* The Supervisor will be proactive in meeting the needs of the patients, families, physicians and staff.
* Performs other related job duties as requested.
_Required:_
+ Graduate of a Nursing program.
+ One year of prior work experience in Nursing
+ Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse license
+ BLS certification from American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or Canadian equivalent, is required before start date and valid at least 60 days beyond start date.
_Preferred:_
+ Bachelor’s degree in science in Nursing
+ Three years of prior work experience in Nursing or Charge Nurse work experience
