IT Engineer - Linux

PURPOSE
The Linux Engineer II is responsible for the implementation, configuration, and maintenance of EPB’s Linux-based systems within the Information Technology Engineering division. This role supports ongoing projects and operational initiatives, ensuring system reliability, security, and performance. The engineer collaborates with project managers, system administrators, and cross-functional teams to deliver stable, scalable infrastructure solutions that align with EPB’s operational goals and service standards.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
-Administer and maintain EPB’s Linux environments (RHEL, Ubuntu, CentOS, or similar).
-Perform routine system monitoring, verify system integrity, and review performance metrics.
-Assist in configuration and deployment of Linux-based infrastructure across EPB’s data centers and cloud environments.
-Support and troubleshoot server hardware, virtualization platforms, and operating systems.
-Maintain and update configuration management scripts and tools; Ansible experience preferred.
-Assist with UCS (Cisco Unified Computing System) infrastructure management and integration.
-Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and documentation for system changes.
-Collaborate with peers to implement secure, reliable, and efficient systems in accordance with EPB policies.
-Participate in the evaluation and testing of new technologies to support system modernization efforts.
-Perform patching, updates, and vulnerability remediation following security best practices.
-Monitor and respond to system alerts, including participation in on-call rotations as needed to maintain uptime and service levels.
-Work with cloud and hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, or similar) to support EPB’s IT infrastructure initiatives.
-Participate in disaster recovery and backup operations to ensure business continuity.
-Support internal customers and maintain a strong focus on customer service and timely issue resolution.
-Identify opportunities to improve automation, system performance, and overall efficiency.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
-Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
-3–5 years of professional experience supporting Linux environments in a production setting.
-Hands-on experience with Cisco UCS, virtualization technologies (VMware, Openshift), and storage management.
-Experience with configuration management tools such as Ansible.
-Familiarity with networking concepts (DNS, DHCP, TCP/IP, firewalls).
-Experience with monitoring tools such as Splunk or WhatsUp Gold.
-Basic scripting experience (Bash, Python, or similar) for automation and troubleshooting.
-Exposure to cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP) and hybrid infrastructures is a plus.
CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
-Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license in state of residence.
-Industry certifications such as RHCSA, CompTIA Linux+, or equivalent are preferred.
-Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
-Excellent communication and documentation skills, both written and verbal.
-Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
-Commitment to continuous learning and staying current with emerging technologies.
