The Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) is an interactive, on-demand parallel computing system that uses a large computing cluster to enable Laboratory researchers to augment the processing power of desktop systems with high-performance computational cluster nodes to process larger sets of sensor data, create higher-fidelity simulations, and develop entirely new algorithms. LLSC supports numerous programming languages and software libraries, including C, C++, Fortran, Java, MPI, PVL, and VSIPL; however, approximately 85% of Laboratory users run parallel MATLAB codes using the Lincoln Laboratory-developed pMatlab library (http://www.ll.mit.edu/pMatlab (http://www.ll.mit.edu/mission/cybersec/softwaretools/pmatlab/pmatlab.html) ) or The MathWorks-developed MATLAB Distributed Computing Toolbox. The Lincoln Laboratory Supercomputing Center (LLSC) team is a world leader in interactive supercomputing, big data technologies, and online education. Our team analyzes, architects, builds, and transitions technology, algorithms, and systems to our user base of 1000+ brilliant MIT researchers. We develop leading edge, supercomputing solutions to satisfy the Nation's most difficult problems. Our supercomputing team is completely vertically integrated and we innovate at every level of the supercomputing system from reducing the environmental impact of our systems with innovative data center technologies to collaborating with world-class cyber security experts to make our systems more resilient, from developing revolutionary programming environments to make supercomputing easier for scientists and engineers. Our supercomputing researchers publish extensively both independently and in collaboration with our users. Our team runs the largest computing conference in New England where our researchers share their research with supercomputing peers. As leading contributors, the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (the largest and greenest open research data center in the World) and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory BeaverWorks, we are well-positioned to grow our capability both technically and intellectually.
As a research intern, you will assist in the study, development, prototyping, and characterization of new technologies for interactive supercomputing, big data technologies, and/or online educational technology. We seek highly motivated computational science and engineering interns who want to develop the next generation of supercomputing technologies. Important skills include: parallel computing expertise; mathematical analysis of data across a range of applications; experience working with state-of-the-art systems; and a strong interest in publishing the results in a conferences and journals. Each selected intern will be mentored by a staff member and placed in a team to conduct research and development in one of the above and other related areas. Interns will participate fully in our team’s activities, which include plenty of educational opportunities including seminars, tours, etc.
Requirements: Candidates should be working towards a BS (junior year or later preferred), MS, or PHD in computational science, engineering or mathematics.
Compensation
Hourly pay rates below are effective January 2025 – December 2025 and will be reviewed again for Summer 2026.
+ Freshman (BS expected May/June 2029): $24.50/hour
+ Sophomore (BS expected May/June 2028): $26.00/hour
+ Junior (BS expected May/June 2027): $28.00/hour
+ Senior (5-year BS program, completed 4 years by May/June 2026): $31.00/hour
+ Bachelor’s degree completed in 2026: $34.50/hour
+ BS + 1 (BS completed May/June 2025, 1st year of MS in 2025–26): $36.00/hour
+ BS + 2 (BS completed May/June 2024, 2nd year of MS in 2025–26, degree not yet conferred): $37.50/hour
+ MS (Master’s degree expected May/June 2026): $38.00/hour
+ MS + 1 (MS completed May/June 2025, 1st year of PhD in 2025–26): $40.50/hour
+ MS + 2 (MS completed May/June 2024, 2nd year of PhD in 2025–26): $42.00/hour
+ MS + 3 (MS completed May/June 2023, 3rd year of PhD in 2025–26): $43.00/hour
Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
