Job Description Summary
Reporting to the Facilities Director, the Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the operations, maintenance, and preventive care of all building systems and facilities across the Morris Arboretum’s 200+ acre complex. This includes oversight of mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, irrigation, communication, and alarm systems, as well as the interior and exterior upkeep of furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E). The role also supports seasonal installations, event preparation, snow removal, and emergency response, while managing projects from estimating materials to completion.
The Maintenance Mechanic works closely with outside contractors, Arboretum staff, and University partners to ensure high-quality facilities that are safe, functional, and welcoming for staff, visitors, and the Penn community.
Job Description
Job Responsibilities
+ Oversee and evaluate the built physical environment of the Morris Arboretum complex (200+ acres).
+ Perform preventive maintenance and repair across all systems: mechanical, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, irrigation, communication, and alarms.
+ Maintain and repair interior and exterior FF&E, as well as greenhouses, paved areas, roadways, water features, and security gates.
+ Manage scheduled garden operations (openings, closings, seasonal installations) and provide facilities support for events.
+ Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies to ensure timely resolution.
+ Manage multiple projects, including cost estimating, material procurement, and equipment planning.
+ Oversee and evaluate outside contractors and trades professionals.
+ Support seasonal exhibit construction, installations, and snow removal.
+ Complete documentation, reporting, and compliance requirements.
+ Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
+ High school diploma or equivalent required; technical school, trades certifications, or apprenticeship training preferred.
+ Minimum 3 years of facilities maintenance experience (5+ preferred) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Strong knowledge of mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
+ Valid driver’s license required.
+ Ability to work with Microsoft Office and prepare basic reports.
+ Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
+ Ability to work independently and collaboratively, including supervision of outside contractors.
+ Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift at least 50 lbs.
