Sarasota County is seeking a skilled and motivated Review Engineer to join our Planning and Development Services team. This professional and technical role involves performing civil engineering plan reviews to ensure compliance with the Sarasota County Unified Development Code and related standards. Using sound engineering judgment, you’ll review a variety of land development projects, including site and subdivision plans, plats, Community Development Districts (CDDs), right-of-way use permits, lot drainage plans, and more. You’ll play a vital role in maintaining the integrity of the County’s development standards while contributing to safe, sustainable, and well-designed communities.
In this position, you will also organize, plan, and supervise the activities of the Land Development Inspection and Lot Drainage Teams, coordinating closely with other departments and external agencies. You’ll oversee construction and inspection activities, prepare technical reports, participate in public meetings, and support updates to the Unified Development Code (UDC). About the Position
In this role, you will be responsible for...
Land Development Project Review
+ Perform detailed technical reviews of land development plans and manage multiple projects through approval.
+ Ensure compliance with county regulations and provide timely, high-quality feedback within established timeframes.
+ Maintain project files, checklists, and documentation to support efficient review and inspection processes.
+ Collaborate with internal teams to resolve design or compliance issues.
Field Oversight and Coordination
+ Supervise Land Development Inspectors and Lot Drainage Teams, monitoring construction and inspection activities.
+ Review lot drainage plans and address field concerns through site visits and technical reports.
+ Coordinate with inspection teams, other county departments, and outside agencies such as FDOT and SWFWMD.
+ Serve as a point of contact for citizen inquiries and stakeholder communication.
Administrative and Public Support
+ Prepare Commission packets, technical presentations, and other project documentation.
+ Participate in public meetings, workshops, and committee discussions related to land development projects.
+ Assist with Unified Development Code (UDC) updates, budget preparation, and fee assessments.
+ Support continuous improvement through process updates and interdepartmental collaboration.
About the Schedule
Work Hours:
+ Full-time, 40 hours per week.
+ Typical Schedule: Monday - Friday, 08:00 a.m. to 05:00 p.m. ( no weekends! )

About You
To be considered for this role, you must have the following:
+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Civil Engineering or a technically related engineering field with 4(+) years of related Civil Engineering or infrastructure construction/inspection experience.
+ OR: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a related field with 3(+) years of related Civil Engineering or infrastructure construction/inspection experience.
+ Must be a registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) in the State of Florida or have the ability to obtain within 12 months from the date of hire.
The ideal candidate has the following knowledge, skills, and/or abilities:

+ Experience with Sarasota County Land Development Regulations, Engineering Manuals, Design Standards, and Specifications.
+ Background in subdivision/site design and review, roadway design, and construction management or oversight.
+ Knowledge of modern public works and engineering practices, including materials testing, surveying, project stakeout, and inspections.
+ Relevant certifications such as FEMA Training, Stormwater Erosion & Sediment Control, Work Zone Safety, and Maintenance of Traffic (MOT).
+ Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn systems like SharePoint, ArcGIS, and Workday.
Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move 20 lbs.
About Everything Else
Starting Pay Range: $ 74,713.60 - $89,000.00, based on experience.
