    Description of Job

    GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

    The assistant principal acts as primary support for the principal with respect to teacher supervision and evaluation, scheduling, and daily coverage needs, as well as assists students in establishing high standards of conduct by overseeing student discipline, behavior support, and attendance. This position reports directly to the Principal of the School for the Blind for grades K-12.

    JOB FUNCTIONS

    • Supervises and evaluates teachers and other staff, as designated by the Principal.

    • Assists the principal in instructional coaching on classroom management and evaluation of staff related to Standard II of the Teacher Rubric.

    • Trains, monitors, and/or supports Tier I and Tier II MTSS behavior expectations.

    • Is a member of the MTSS student support team for individual students, and when necessary, makes appropriate referrals for interventions, testing, guidance, or counseling.

    • Works with the student support staff to collaborate on supporting student behaviors.

    • Oversees student discipline and support, including investigating incidents; administering appropriate consequences; creating and maintaining discipline records and implementing restorative approaches with students, involving and conferring with students, parents, teachers, counselors, community members, law enforcement officers/officials, and home school districts.

    • Resolves discipline problems in a fair and just manner and oversees/maintains records of any disciplinary action taken.

    • Investigates student complaints and grievances and interviews students and witnesses in disciplinary investigations.

    • Assist the principal in building systems for restorative practices and collaborate with subject matter experts to implement practices throughout the school and directly with students.

    • Trains staff around the purpose, reason, and approaches within a restorative practices mindset.

    • Re-enters students upon completion of out-of-school suspensions, facilitates student/teacher reentry meetings, and provides Peer Mediation to resolve student conflicts.

    • Supervises students as needed in classrooms, hallways, outdoors, pick-up/drop-off, lunch detentions, and/or in-school suspensions.

    • Supports student behaviors and disciplinary action for all blind and low vision students on campus, including students in the K–12, preschool, and BTL programs.

    • Oversees all matters of student attendance and addresses the improvement of student attendance and truancy. • Works with the student life director to support collaboration between school programs and extracurricular activities/residential programs.

    • Serves as a member of multiple Professional Learning Communities and committees to support schoolwide efforts focused on providing the best possible culture and instruction of students. • Participates in activities related to professional development and training/workshops as appropriate.

    • Positively serves as a team member that serves students who are blind and of the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB) as a whole; and participates in regular team and departmental meetings, school and instructional meetings as required.

    • Assists the Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and the Principal with scheduling and implementation of district and state assessments.

    • Makes recommendations for appropriate revisions of and assists in the interpretation of programs, policies, and procedures affecting students’ lives in school and residential programs.

    • Assists the principal in instructional coaching on classroom management and evaluation of staff related to Standard II of the Teacher Rubric.

    • Oversees scheduling of classes and student groupings.

    • Assists the Principal, administrative assistant, and sub coordinator with daily coverage needs.

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s Degree in Education or School Counseling or a closely related field from an accredited college or university, with a preference toward a specialization in Blind Education.

    • Must hold or be eligible for appropriate principal licensure in the State of Colorado. Additional endorsement as a Special Education Specialist: Blind/Visually Impaired, or School counselor, or comparable endorsement preferred.

    • 3 years of experience teaching or counseling children (in an educational environment) who are blind/visually impaired.

    • Experience in an administrative position or demonstrated leadership in area of expertise with knowledge and aptitude specific to MTSS and/or PBIS preferred.

    • Demonstrated proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) at required skill level as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool and according to school policy/procedures.

    • Braille Awareness as demonstrated through an appropriate assessment tool, according to school policy/ procedure.

    KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of and ability to apply current standards-based educational and behavioral practices with students who are blind/visually impaired.

    • Knowledge of the ability to assess and apply technology to perform the requirements of the position; ability to effectively utilize a variety of computer software applications, which may include but is not limited to on-site learning environments, telepresence, and multiple distance education technologies and delivery modes; ability to effectively implement technology necessary to model, teach, and assist students relative to instruction and activities.

    • Ability to establish high standards for what students must know and be able to do.

    • Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff who are blind/ visually impaired.

    • Ability to respond effectively and positively to feedback.

    • Ability to work cooperatively with others and participate effectively in a team setting.

    • Strong, positive interpersonal skills.

    ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

    Reports to and is evaluated by the Principal, School for the Blind..

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

    • Full-time; scheduled to work the standard number of days in the academic year (as per the established School Calendar, currently 195 days, August to June), with 12(twelve) additional days, for a total of 207 days.

    • The annual base salary shall be established pursuant to the Executive Professional Salary Schedule E08 A, based upon appropriate education and experience.

    • Employment is at-will, with no actual, expressed, or implied contract.

     

    EFFECTIVE DATE: School Year 2025-2026

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    Generally speaking, the work is performed in a typical school office environment and involves sedentary to light physical activity, requiring exertion of up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Typically, workers are required to climb stairs, bend, reach, and handle objects, and use fingers to operate computer and/ or typewriter keyboard. Work requires expression or exchange of ideas and the ability to receive detailed information. Work requires ability to compare, compile, analyze, and coordinate data/ information; ability to instruct/ train others; and ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills/ behaviors. In addition, work at the elementary school level involves heavy physical activity, requiring exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and routinely requires stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling. Work at the middle school/ high school level involves very heavy physical activity, requiring exertion in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally. Work with Special Needs students will require exertion of force frequently.
