    Yampa Valley Regional Airport Equipment Operations Technician

    SUMMARY:

    Under general supervision, operates light and heavy vehicles and equipment in the performance of airport and airfield maintenance and other types of airport construction and maintenance projects; assists with preventive vehicle and equipment maintenance and repairs; assists with ordering and stockings parts and supplies; assists operations, safety and security staff during emergency operations as required; and performs other related duties as required.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Equipment Operation:

    •Operates light and heavy vehicles and equipment in the performance of airport and airfield maintenance and other types of airport construction and maintenance projects; operates heavy equipment such as rotary brooms, snow blowers, plow trucks, loaders, and motor graders to clear snow and ice from runways, taxiways and aircraft aprons and to maintain a safe and operational airfield.

    •Operates other heavy and light equipment in support of other airport and airfield infrastructure and construction projects/activities.

    •Assesses equipment capabilities and determines which equipment is best suited for a particular job.

    •Monitors equipment function and identifies mechanical or operational problems; conducts daily required equipment inspections to identify needed maintenance and notifies a mechanic of major maintenance issues; performs preventive or minor maintenance such as fluid changes, wearing edge changes, lubrication, tire changes, and mechanical adjustments.

    •Identifies unsafe conditions on equipment, infrastructure, and airfield; notifies supervisor of potential problems in a timely manner.

    Equipment Maintenance/Repair:

    •Performs semi-skilled work to maintain and repair a limited variety of light and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, both in the shop and in the field as necessary.

    •Troubleshoots routine to moderately complex problems with gas hybrid, gasoline, and diesel equipment; performs minor repairs and replaces standard parts, both in the field and the shop.

    •May maintain and/or repair specialized departmental equipment such as airport navigational aids or baggage handling machines.

    •Assists with testing equipment to verify that problems have been corrected.

    General Duties:

    •Assists with ordering and stocking parts to maintain a required inventory.

    •Maintains necessary records of all work performed.

    •Identifies unsafe conditions on equipment, infrastructure, and airfield and notifies supervisor of potential problems in a timely manner.

    •Performs seasonal airfield maintenance duties to include asphalt patching, dust suppression, sweeping, mowing, crack sealing, tree trimming, or other maintenance tasks.

    •Performs minor electrical repairs to runway/taxiway lighting and other airfield-related systems.

    •Installs signs, checks airport perimeters/fencing, and performs routine building maintenance and construction- related tasks.

    •Responds politely and appropriately to public inquiries regarding work that is being performed; directs comments or questions to a supervisor as appropriate.

    •Provides training and guidance to less experienced employees as assigned.

    •Assists in keeping shop facilities clean and organized.

    •Provides training and assistance to less experienced employees.

    •Uses a computer to maintain files and records.

    •Delivers and/or picks up items at other locations.

    •May perform semi-skilled welding, cutting, and fabrication of metals.

    •May perform service at field sites where equipment is being operated; may drive a service truck to the site and stock the truck with necessary parts, tools, and equipment.

    •Performs other related duties as assigned.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

    Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

    Education:

    Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent.

    Experience:

    Three years of general facilities maintenance or construction experience; OR two years of airport maintenance, construction or operations experience.

    Substitution:

    Vocational training/education may substitute for the above-required experience on a year for year basis to a maximum of two years.

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES:

    Valid Colorado Driver’s License may be required to operate a County vehicle.

    CURRENT 2025 BENEFITS FOR SEASONAL/TEMPORARY EMPLOYEE:

    •Sick Time Accrued for every 30 hours worked

    Must be able to successfully complete a Federal Security Background Check for TSA SIDA badging requirements.
