    Essential functions (job duties):

    Job Purpose:

    The Patient Financial Counselor interacts with patients, clinical, data and finance team members to create an exceptional patient experience. This position is responsible for supporting patients with financial assistance applications, addressing payment concerns, educating, and assisting patients with enrollment in health benefit plans, and any insurance related issues. Assist with patient registration operations in a designated outpatient clinic setting. This position will report to the Manager, Data and Quality.

    Essential Functions:

    Provide support to patients requiring health insurance enrollment assistance. Educate patients on eligible health insurance plans. Assist patients with completing Ryan White Client Eligibility requirements. Counsel and connect clients to supportive services or resources with local and state agencies. Maintain current knowledge of Medicaid/Medicare and other Health Insurance Plans.

     

    Performs data entry into Electronic Medical Records, Care Ware, and other database systems. Monitor and track patient supportive services. Create required program reports.

     

    Works with patients on addressing payment concerns or unpaid invoices. Collaborate with clinic leadership and program finance representatives regarding billing concerns related to clinical services.

     

    Supports check-in and check-out processes for patients and scheduling appointments as needed. Confirms patient demographics, insurance information, prior authorization, and physician referrals as needed.

     

    Perform other related duties as assigned.

    Unique duties:

    Qualifications:

    Education: High school completion (or GED)

     

    Bachelors or Associates degree from an accredited college or university preferred.

     

    Experience: Intermediate (3 to 4 years job-related experience)

     

    Prior medical or billing experience preferred.

     

    Prior experience in public health or community based social services setting.

     

    Experience in health insurance enrollment assistance, insurance third-party billing procedures, delivery of patient supportive services and Electronic Medical Records or other client-related database systems

     

    Medical billing, medical terminology, and health insurance enrollment knowledge is required.

     

    Experience using Microsoft Excel.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and have a high level of customer service skills.

     

    Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain productive working relationships with physicians, patients, their families, and other individuals both inside and outside the practice area.

     

    Ability to perform bookkeeping duties, including strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

     

    Ability to establish and meet deadlines, work under pressure, and function independently.

     

    Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
