    Description:

    MercyOne Central Iowa operates four not-for-profit, Catholic medical centers in Des Moines, West Des Moines, Newton and Centerville and two specialty hospitals – MercyOne Children’s Hospital in Des Moines and MercyOne Rehabilitation Hospital in Clive (965 beds total) – along with more than 20 additional facilities that house more than 50 primary care, pediatric, internal medicine and specialty clinics.     GENERAL SUMMARY:

    Provides basic nursing skills in an outpatient clinic setting.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Demonstrates professional, appropriate, effective and tactful written, verbal, and nonverbal communication with patient, families, medical staff, colleagues, vendors, and other departments throughout the continuum of care to promote continuity of care and services and enhance clinic image.

    • Demonstrates positive professional customer service in all patient, staff, and visitor contacts

    • Utilizes interpersonal skills to establish and maintain healthy interpersonal relationships with healthcare members, patients, and families.

    • Acknowledges patient’s rights on confidentiality issues, maintains patient confidentiality at all times, and follows HIPAA guidelines and regulations.

    • Participates in staff development activities and orientation as requested.

    • Proactively acts as patient advocate, responding to and working to resolve patient concerns.

    • CPR certified.

    • Responsible for following equipment maintenance protocol, identifying problems, and coordinating appropriate repairs.

    • Operation of various office machines( i.e. fax, copier, phone, and computer).

    • Participates effectively as a team member in the clinic.

    Nursing/CMA

    • Demonstrates ability to recognize and assess emergency needs of patients and initiate appropriate emergency procedures as needed.

    • Demonstrates current level of knowledge of various payor regulations by functioning within those guidelines.

    • Acts to facilitate interdisciplinary communication. Utilizes other members of the health care team in assessing the patient and analyzes patient data. Assesses learning needs of the patient and significant others. Gives accurate and complete information to patient and family.

    • Evaluates patient and family understanding of treatment plan and/or instructions.

    • Assists with a variety of procedures, exams and/or operation of diagnostic equipment as assigned (i.e. colposcopy, endoscopy, tympanometry, treadmills, etc.).

    • Maintains appropriate aseptic technique for preparation, procedures and medications administered.

    • Accurately and legibly documents all patient interactions in patient record

    • Reports results and pertinent information to patients and health care team members.

    • Functions according to limitations or scope of license or certification.

    • Performs basic nursing functions (vitals, rooming, assist with procedures, etc), under direction and supervision of physician.

    • Maintains a current CMA certification

    MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

    • Work requires extensive technical or specialized training such as would be acquired in a college or technical school (e.g. CMA, MLT).

    • Knowledge of:

    o Principles of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.

    • CMA certification must be obtained within first year of employment and maintained thereafter.

    • Clinic/physician office experience preferred.

    • CPR Certification (obtained within 6 months of start date).
