Overview
UMIAQ Design is seeking a Civil Engineer-in-Training who is interested in gaining practical experience on the design, operations, maintenance, and management of rural water and wastewater utility systems. This is a rare opportunity to work directly with utility operators and administrators under the direction of registered Professional Civil Engineers, gaining the experience required to become a registered professional civil engineer in Alaska. In addition to providing support for water and wastewater systems, UMIAQ Design maintains a diverse portfolio of challenging infrastructure projects throughout rural and urban Alaska. With several recent large project awards and ongoing support contracts, the successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to a variety of projects, working independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Current and upcoming projects include water and wastewater treatment facility upgrades, water and wastewater system improvements, utility project planning, and unique, Alaska-specific, engineering challenges. This exciting career opportunity will address some of the most challenging Alaska and arctic infrastructure problems, making a positive measurable impact on communities throughout Alaska.
Responsibilities
Essential functions will include:
+ Work under the direction of a Professional Civil Engineer, with increasing responsibility based on performance and demonstrated capability.
+ Assist in the planning, design, and construction administration for capital improvement and expansion projects of community water and wastewater facilities and systems.
+ Support utility operators and administrators with operational engineering solutions addressing water and wastewater facility and system maintenance issues.
+ Conduct site visits and field investigations to support project planning and design.
+ Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, regulatory agencies, and external consultants throughout project development.
+ Prepare design and construction documents across all project phases.
+ Support the bidding process, including development of bid documents and contractor coordination.
+ Provide construction administration services and assist with project closeout.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
+ Passed Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (EIT).
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Knowledge of civil engineering design principles, preparation of design documents, and traditional construction methods.
+ Experience in water and sewer system planning and design is preferred but not required.
+ Experience with AutoCAD drafting is preferred but not required.
+ Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening.
Physical and Mental Demands:
+ Travel to remote project locations using various modes of transportation.
+ Lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
+ Access and navigate unimproved terrain and active construction sites, often in varying weather conditions.
+ Manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a professional environment.
Working Conditions
+ May require travel to remote areas of Alaska throughout the year.
+ Work may be conducted in both indoor office settings and outdoor field environments, including active construction sites.
