Position Overview:

The Canine Instructor supports the design, implementation, and ongoing development of The Children’s Village Canine Rescue and Rehabilitation Program. This role bridges youth vocational training, animal welfare, and therapeutic engagement, using the care and training of rescue dogs as a hands-on opportunity for teaching skill development and responsibility. The Instructor provides structured education to youth, guiding them in all aspects of dog handling, obedience training, grooming, transportation, and basic health maintenance. This position supports the Working Alongside Youth (WAY) Program, an internal internship initiative that helps youth build transferable and job-readiness skills through meaningful on-site experience.

Position Qualifications:

Certification in dog training (CPDT, KPA, or similar) or two years of experience in dog training/behavior, including both individual and group instruction required. Strong knowledge of canine care, training, and safety standards. Excellent organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Creative thinker with the ability to design engaging, youth-centered programming. Strong computer skills for documentation and recordkeeping. Valid NYS driver’s license required. Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred. Minimum 2 years’ experience working with youth, preferably in residential, recreational, or therapeutic settings.
