Job Description
The Director of Military Affairs provides leadership, vision, and strategic direction for all programs and services supporting military-affiliated students—including active duty, veterans, reservists, and their dependents. Under general direction, the Director oversees compliance with federal and state regulations, manages military-related benefits, leads outreach and retention initiatives, fosters partnerships that advance student success, and collaborates with the ROTC programs. This role also serves as a campus and community advocate for military-affiliated students and supervises staff within the Office of Military Affairs.
Salary: $80,000 annually
Responsibilities:
Compliance & Benefits Administration
+ Ensure compliance with federal, state, and Texas A&M University System policies related to military and veteran education benefits (e.g. VA, Hazlewood Act, etc.)
+ Oversee certification and processing of federal and state VA education benefits to include the Hazlewood Act exemption, and other Department of Defense military student benefits.
+ Serve as the liaison to the State Approving Agency (SAA); establish relationships with federal, state and local veterans’ services agencies and serves as the University subject matter expert on veterans’ educational programs, policies, procedures, and regulations.
+ Conduct quality control of student records, enrollment, and internal communication to confirm eligibility and accuracy.
+ Train and certify staff in benefit processing systems and provide professional development opportunities. (e.g., VA Enrollment Manager, Banner).
Student Support, Outreach & Retention
+ Develop and implement strategic plans for the enhancement of a welcoming, encouraging, and supportive campus environment for Veterans and all military connected students.
+ Develop and implement a mechanism to identify program needs including but not limited to financial and academic matters and determine resources to meet those needs.
+ Implement plans, programs, and processes to enhance and facilitate enrollment for the veteran population.
+ Monitor student progress and implement retention strategies throughout the student lifecycle.
+ Organize programming and campus/community events for military affiliated students.
+ Build partnerships with community, governmental, and military organizations.
+ Assist with operations, recruitment, and expansion strategies for Army and Airforce ROTC programs; create pipeline for Marine/Navy ROTC opportunities.
Veteran Advocacy
+ Serve as the spokesperson for military and veteran student needs on campus and in the community.
+ Develop partnerships with military installations, veteran-serving organizations, and government agencies.
+ Promote awareness of veteran issues to faculty, staff, and administration.
+ Represent the university at veteran and military community events.
+ Collaborate with academic departments and colleges to serve as a veteran advocate for new programs and course offerings.
Leadership & Supervision
+ Manage daily operations of the Office of Military Affairs.
+ Supervise, train, and evaluate professional staff, student employees, and interns.
+ Approve leave, assign duties, and oversee professional development opportunities for staff.
+ Manage departmental budget and expenditures to the extent authorized, ensuring expenditures are necessary and directly related to supporting the institutions enrollment goals.
+ Provide data reports and assessments on military student outcomes, retention, and graduation rates.
+ Prepare annual report for Military Affairs and prepare annual assessment plan according to University requirements.
Other Duties
+ Serve on university committees and working groups.
+ Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor's degree or higher in related field.
+ Ten (10) years of related experience working with veterans in a higher education setting.
Preferred Required Education and Experience:
+ Master’s degree in higher education administration, public administration, business, counseling, or related field.
+ Military service background or close military family affiliation.
+ Experience with systems such as Banner, VA Enrollment Manager, Tungsten, and Academic Institution Portal (AiPortal).
+ Record of successful program development, student retention initiatives, and community engagement.
