    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE

    The Laboratory Engineer provides engineering services in support of the research activities of the Translational Center for Barrier Micro physiological Systems (TraCe-bMPS) and the Materials and Metrology Core (MMC) of the Lake Ontario Microplastics Center (LOMP). The engineer works to solve specialized engineering problems This role ensures the availability of high-quality materials, protocols, and technical resources for participating laboratories, including selection and purchasing of components, while developing and managing TraCe-bMPS as a university service center. The position contributes to the success of sponsored research and pilot projects through proposal writing, advanced scientific problem-solving, and engineering innovation. To do this, he/she draws on a wide breadth and depth of theoretical and practical knowledge and engineering insight. The engineer supervises staff assisting with experiments and provides support to teaching activities.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Engineers original process workflows for the fabrication, identification, and quantification of microplastics from raw materials and extracted from environmental and biological samples.

    + Leads the design of nanomembranes to be used in biological tissue models, biosensors, electrokinetic devices, and wearable hemodialysis systems for use in human research applications.

    + Leads the quality inspection, models distribution workflows, and develops associated software.

    + Acts as a lead for the team that uses these tools to support TraCe-bMPS and LOMP collaborating laboratories.

    + Provides engineering support to TraCe-bMPS and LOMP through the design and manufacturing of mechanical solutions and components using machine shop, clean-room processing, 3D printing, and advanced Nano and micro fabrication tools.

    + Trains and manages users of the High Content Imaging Core (HCIC) – an essential resource for TraCe-bMPS and the MMC.

    + Generates report, analyzes data, and develops presentations and proposals related to engineering tasks and outcome

    + Designs and deploys novel websites and other communication and management software tools to assist with Center management

    + Performs purchasing and lab management tasks for the McGrath lab.

    + Maintains contact and communication with key vendors providing engineered parts and systems solutions.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Bachelor’s degree in engineering Required

    + Master’s degree

    + 2 years of related experience Required

    + Experience in research and providing research support services Required

    + Financial and operational experience in business Required

    + or equivalent combination of education and experience Required

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Excellent engineering design and development skills. Required

    + Proficient engineering design and simulation software (CAD, COMSOL, MATLAB) Required

    + Familiarity with Wordpress for website development and management

    + Computer programming ability Required

    + Engineering fabrication techniques (machine shop, 3D printing, etc)

    + Ability to work and lead teams according to project needs. Required

    + Excellent communication skills. Required

    + Ability to manage team as supervisor. Required
