Michael Foods, Inc. located in the Village of West Jefferson, OH, is located just minutes from the western suburbs of Columbus and about 20 minutes to the west of downtown. Responsibilities
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager provide leadership in workplace safety, environmental compliance, and risk management across Michael Foods locations. This role ensures a safe and compliant work environment, aligning with OSHA regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for developing safety strategies, leading training efforts, conducting audits, and driving continuous improvement in accident prevention. As a key member of the management team, this role influences both location and company-wide safety initiatives, ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and workplace safety regulations. This position has the responsibility to comply with safety work rules at all times as well as an obligation to reinforce safety as a core value. Ensures that all policies, procedures, and activities related to food safety & quality are followed and complied with uniformly, in an effort to reduce product and process variability.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assumes personal responsibility to ensure a safe and healthy workplace for everyone. Adheres to all safety policies/procedures and incorporates safety and health in all job duties/tasks.
2. Adheres to safe work practices, follows GMP’s, maintains sanitary conditions and ensures that product quality is maintained. Report any conditions or practices that may adversely affect employee safety or food safety/quality to management immediately.
3. Attends and actively participates in EHS meetings/trainings.
4. Ensures EHS regulatory compliance at all times.
5. Oversee the daily operation of the wastewater treatment system to ensure full permit compliance and operational reliability.
6. Works with Corporate environmental stall to ensure wastewater discharge reporting is done in full compliance including sampling and reporting.
7. Leads and oversees all site environmental programs including sustainability and air, waste, and water compliance programs including storage and management.
8. In cooperation with Operations and HR Manager, leads Element 1 and acts as technical resource for all other SRMP teams.
9. Identifies employee EHS training needs with and develops/updates training materials.
10. Identifies unsafe work conditions/practices through workplace audits and takes appropriate action to eliminate these conditions and behaviors.
11. Maintains/monitors investigation, record keeping and follow up regarding all workplace accidents.
12. Ensures compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations (standards), EPA (and State and Local equivalents) requirements, as well as other governmental agencies.
13. Works with workers compensation carrier as well as third party providers to ensure cost-effective and appropriate handling of all workers’ compensation claims.
14. Determines requirements as associated with personal protective equipment (PPE).
15. Maintains and updates all written EHS programs.
16. Supports the entire management team in administering appropriate and consistent disciplinary actions for violation of EHS rules and policy.
17. Schedules and coordinates required industrial safety testing and monitoring.
18. Participate in companywide safety and training teams.
19. Actively supports other team members in their efforts to support facilities EHS programs.
20. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Bachelor’s degree in environmental health & safety or related field (or equivalent work experience).
• 5+ years of experience in industrial safety and regulatory compliance.
• Knowledge of OSHA standards, food safety regulations, and case management procedures for workplace incidents.
SKILLS & COMPETENCIES
• Leadership & Influence – Ability to lead cross-functional teams, drive strategic safety initiatives, and influence workplace culture.
• Problem-Solving & Risk Analysis – Expertise in root cause analysis (RCA), data-driven decision-making, and compliance assessment.
• Training & Employee Development – Strong experience in adult learning techniques, facilitating safety meetings, and delivering compliance training.
• Regulatory Compliance & Audit Management – Ability to interpret regulations, lead inspections, and execute compliance strategies.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to present safety concepts effectively to all levels of the organization.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and safety management systems (Intelex, SharePoint, SAP).
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS & ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
• OSHA 30-hour certification preferred (or ability to obtain within 90 days).
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Safety Management Specialist (SMS) certification preferred.
• First Aid/CPR/AED certification highly desired.
• Ability to work in cold, hot, wet, noisy, or dusty environments as required.
