             Custodian Salary $19.50 Hourly Location Collegeville, MN Job Type Non-Exempt, Support Staff, Full Time Job Number 202500016 Department Custodial - Abbey Opening Date 10/24/2025 + Description + Benefits Position Summary Saint John's Abbey, located on the Saint John's University campus, invites applications for the full-time, benefit eligible position of Custodian. In accordance with the Roman Catholic Church's Code of Canon Law and the custom of Saint John's Abbey, entrance to the cloistered area of the monastery residence is limited to males. This position reports to the Director of Abbey Housekeeping. The position has custodian duties in the Abbey monastic residence, including the Retirement Center and the monastic refectory, as well as the Abbey Church, Abbey Guesthouse and Abbey guest facilities. The position is responsible for all aspects of cleanliness, safety and appearance, refuse/recycling removal and sanitation of assigned areas. Also does carpet shampooing, floor refinishing, minor repairs, and maintains and operates cleaning equipment used to complete duties. This position may also be responsible as needed for laundering clothing, bedding and linens used in the various Abbey areas. This position may be called upon to assist with serving food and associated cleaning activities in the Abbey guest facility. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated. Responsibilities 1.Responsible for the upkeep, safety and appearance of assigned areas. 2.Responsible for cleaning and sanitizing resident and guest rooms and associated bathrooms, common restrooms and bath and shower areas, including their fixtures. 3.Responsible for floor care, including sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping, auto scrubbing, carpet cleaning and refinishing. 4.Responsible for cleaning and care of windows, window coverings, furnishings, fixtures, etc., including replacement of light bulbs, within the assigned areas. 5.Remove refuse and recyclable materials from the buildings to outside holding containers and pick-up areas. 6.Report problems according to the procedures established by the supervisor. Perform minor repairs as qualified and according to the policies of the department. 7.Assist in moving and storing of furnishings throughout the Abbey facilities as needed. 8.Follow product and equipment usage and safety practices as directed. 9.Maintain equipment in good working order. 10.Maintain Safety Data Sheets, attend company safety meetings and complete online safety training as assigned. 11.Clean and secure work and storage areas and equipment used in performing duties. 12.Under the direction of the department supervisor, may oversee other employees. Secondary Duties 13.Launder clothing, bedding, towels and linens for the Abbey and related departments and areas as assigned. 14.Press garments and linens as required. 15.Removal of snow or anything else that prevents safe entry into or exit from buildings. 16.Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education: High school diploma or equivalent DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Institutional custodian experience preferred; willingness to do on the job training and/or off-site training as required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 1.Ability to read and comprehend written and verbal instruction. 2.Ability to use various cleaning equipment and ladders. 3.Ability to communicate effectively with monks, employees of the Order of Saint Benedict, Saint John’s University, students and visitors. 4.Ability to work with others on the Abbey Housekeeping and Laundry staff, as well as staff from other Abbey departments and offices. 5.Ability to occasionally give direction to other workers on the Abbey Housekeeping and Laundry staff. 6.Ability to use time efficiently and accomplish assigned tasks in the time allocated for the tasks. Ability to adapt daily work plan to the needs of department and the priorities set by the supervisor. 7.Must be able to work with minimal supervision. 8.Knowledge of a variety of specialized cleaning products and procedures. No allergies to strong cleaning products, fumes and/or cleaning aids. 9.Ability to distinguish different fabric types in clothing in regard to fiber content and color and follow the proper laundering procedure for each type. 10.Ability to operate large and small washing machines and automatic presses. Ability to determine what clothing requires pressing and what does not. 11.A valid MN driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required for this position. Physical Abilities: 1.Ability to perform manual labor for prolonged periods of time involving lifting, moving furniture, mopping, scrubbing, making beds, and routine cleaning duties. 2.Ability to do work that requires walking, standing, bending, twisting, kneeling, stooping, squatting, reaching, and climbing. 3.Must be able to frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds. 4.Must be able to occasionally lift up to 75 pounds. HOURS: Typically 6:30 am to 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday, including rotating weekends. Hours may be flexible. Occasionally may need to work before or after typical work hours. LIFE INSURANCE The Order provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance becomes effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary as follows: Salary Life Insurance $0- $20,000 $50,000 $20,001 - $37,500 $75,000 $37,501 - $50,000 $90,000 $50,001 - $66,666 $100,000 $66,667+ 1.5x salary up to a maximum benefit of $400,000 You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available. Employer provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is subject to imputed tax (a tax on the value of the premium). VACATION Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours. The Order recognizes ten official holidays during the calendar year: New Years' Eve Day, New Years' Eve, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Leased employees may receive additional holidays. SICK LEAVE Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members. LONG-TERM DISABILITY After one year of benefit eligible employment, the Order provides coverage in the event of an illness or injury which prevents you from working. This plan provides a benefit which equals 60% of your basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. This benefit will be payable for the benefit duration, provided the employee is unable to perform the usual and customary duties of his/her occupation. FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS / HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS These plans allow employees to set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses. TUITION ASSISTANCE - PREP SCHOOL The tuition assistance plan is an educational grant provided by the Order to a qualified child of a full time employee towards meeting the tuition costs at Saint John's Preparatory School. The dependent must meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive this benefit. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit. TUITION REMISSION - EMPLOYEE Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by the Order to full-time employees. A full-time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free education benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. The payment of special fees is the responsibility of the employee. Full-time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit. PARENTAL LEAVE A three week (15 days) paid leave will be granted to eligible employees due to the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment. RETIREMENT PROGRAM The Order provides two 403(b) retirement plans: A Defined Contribution Plan and a Supplemental Tax Deferred Annuity Plan. These plans are administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA). Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following date of hire, unless the employee elects to opt-out.
