    Title of Position: Director, Volunteer Services

     

    FLSA Status: Exempt

     

    Department: Volunteer Services

     

    Reports to: Senior VP, Development

     

    Salary: $110K-125K

     

    Positions reporting to this position: Special Projects Manager and 2 Volunteer Services Managers

     

    Win’s Volunteer Services department encompasses the recruitment, training, placement, and coordination of volunteers who support Win, as well as the cultivation and distribution of all in-kind donations to the organization. The department matches client & staff needs with appropriate volunteers/in-kind donors to create enriching experiences for clients, offer products/services that Win could not otherwise access, and provide a supplementary workforce to ease staff workloads. Volunteer Services acts as a liaison between frontline staff, in-kind donors, and volunteers, with a responsibility to educate external contributors on best practices of supporting Win in a TIC (trauma-informed care) and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) framework. Volunteers and in-kind donors are essential members of our team, making a significant difference in the lives of the families we serve.

    Overview of the Position:

    The Director of Volunteer Services sets the vision and provides leadership for all volunteer and in-kind donation programs. This role ensures these initiatives are strategically aligned with Win’s goals, well-structured to support growth, and responsive to the evolving needs of families and staff. The Director cultivates relationships across individuals, corporations, nonprofits, schools, and community groups, building strong engagement that can lead to advocacy and philanthropic support. Within Win, the Director serves as the lead advisor on volunteerism and in-kind giving for senior management and the Board.

    Principal Responsibilities:

    Strategic Leadership & Relationship Cultivation

     

    + Develop and implement departmental plans, standards, and evaluation metrics.

    + Partner with Development and Client Services to design volunteer and in-kind programs that enrich clients’ experiences and advance Win’s mission.

    + Establish best practices for recruitment, training, donor education, and acknowledgment that reflect DEI and TIC values.

    + Oversee systems for receiving, organizing, and equitably distributing in-kind donations.

    + Regularly assess departmental staffing, processes, and program effectiveness, making improvements as needed.

    + Report on impact, trends, and long-term needs to senior leadership and the Board.

    + Strengthen existing partnerships while cultivating new corporate, nonprofit, school, and community relationships to expand support.

    + Guide staff across Win sites in effectively engaging and providing feedback on volunteers and in-kind donors.

     

    Staff Supervision & Volunteer Management

     

    + Supervise Volunteer Services Managers and support their leadership of Coordinators.

    + Supervise and provide strategic direction to the Special Projects Manager, guiding the implementation and growth of Win’s Food Truck initiative and ensuring effective execution of cross-departmental projects, donor and partner engagement, and event-based programming that advance Win’s development and program goals.

    + Provide coaching, professional development, and recognition to build a strong, collaborative team culture.

    + Oversee recruitment, onboarding, placement, and training of volunteers to ensure consistency and quality.

     

    Events and Special Projects

     

    + Plan and attend group volunteer activities, kit-packing events, and Win fundraisers as an organizational representative throughout New York City, as needed.

    + Manage recruitment and oversight of volunteers for Win’s Annual Gala.

    + Oversee annual volunteer and in-kind donation initiatives, including the Holiday Gift Program, Backpack Buddies (back-to-school campaign), College Kit Project, Halloween and Thanksgiving programs, and other projects as needed.

    + Ensure equitable distribution of donated resources and volunteer support across Win sites and programs.

     

    Communication/Administration

     

    + Oversee record-keeping and reporting for volunteers, in-kind donations, and events using Salesforce and related platforms.

    + Ensure timely, professional communication with a high volume of volunteers and donors.

    + Collaborate with Development, Communications, and PR partners to highlight volunteer and donor stories and promote engagement.

    + Support staff as needed in Win’s Donation Room and Warehouse.

    + Other duties as assigned

    Essential Functions:

    + Must be able to sit at a computer for the long periods of the workday

    + Must be able to travel to Win sites and other related meetings throughout New York City

    + Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds

    + Must be able to ascend/descend stairs in a Win site

    Qualifications:

    + Commitment to Win’s mission, vision, and values

    + Bachelor’s degree required

    + Excellent math, administrative, organizational, and writing skills; attention to detail

    + Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to adjust communication as socially and culturally appropriate

    + Excellent interpersonal relationship skills and ability to cultivate and maintain effective working relationships at all levels of an organization

    + Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and Salesforce

    + Minimum of five years of supervisory experience

    + Must be able to work some evenings and weekends as needed for special events

    + Previous volunteer work experience preferred

    + Spanish language proficiency preferred

    + Applying and Developing Expertise: Take client issues to the appropriate people within the organization to obtain the most accurate information to meet client needs. Apply technical knowledge to solve a range of problems.

    + Collaborating and Communicating: Value the full spectrum of diversity and inclusion for clients and staff.
