    What We Offer

     

    Project Overview: At Novant Health Radiation Oncology Department, Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte, we are initiating a cutting-edge project to integrate 3D printing technology into our clinical practice. The focus of this project is to utilize the newly acquired Projet MJP 3D printer from 3D Systems to create patient-specific boluses and other medical physics tools, such as phantoms for testing, detector holders, electron blocks, and potentially patient-specific brachytherapy applicators. This internship offers the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of medical physics practices while gaining hands-on experience in a real-world clinical environment.

    Objectives:

    + Install and operate the Projet MJP 3D printer in the Radiation Oncology department.

    + Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the efficient use of the 3D printer.

    + Print patient-specific boluses for radiation therapy treatments.

    + Explore and develop additional 3D printed tools to enhance medical physics pursuits, such as phantoms, detector holders, electron blocks, and brachytherapy applicators.

    Intern Responsibilities:

    + Assist in the installation and operationalization of the Projet MJP 3D printer.

    + Develop and document SOPs for 3D printing processes within the department.

    + Collaborate with the medical physics team to design and print patient-specific boluses and other medical devices.

    + Contribute to ongoing research and development of new applications for 3D printing in medical physics.

    + Participate in routine medical physics tasks and gain exposure to clinical operations.

    Qualifications:

    + Preferred: Students enrolled in Engineering, Physics, Biology, or other technical programs.

    + Minimum: Experience with 3D printing and STL files.

    + Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

    + Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.

    Duration and Schedule:

    + Project through June 2026, with maybe the possibility of extension.

    + Estimated 20 hours per week, with flexibility based on academic schedules.

    Qualifications

    + Education: High School Diploma or GED, required

    + Additional Skills (preferred): Demonstrates customer service skills dealing with senior leaders, personnel, physicians and visitors. Expresses information in clear, concise, organized manner.
