    CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

    The Office of Computing and Information Services (CIS) at the City University of New York (CUNY) supports the IT and telecommunications needs of CUNY's 26 colleges. CIS supports enterprise IT and applications, develops new technologies that advance the University's core mission, builds, upgrades and maintains the University's network, operates the University's Data Center and helpdesk and develops disaster recovery plans for business continuity. Additionally, CIS maintains the CUNYfirst Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution that integrates student administration, financial management, and human resources operations across CUNY’s 26 colleges. Lastly, CIS provides strategic and operational IT leadership with respect to the maintenance, enhancement and expansion of the CUNY network spanning across all CUNY campuses.

     

    The Director of Virtualization, Storage, and Platform Services is a senior IT leader responsible for designing, modernizing, and maintaining enterprise-level virtualization, storage, and hybrid cloud platforms that support CUNY’s academic and administrative operations. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Technology Officer, this position leads the strategic vision, design, and operations oversight of mission-critical infrastructure, including on-premises virtualization clusters, enterprise storage systems, disaster recovery platforms, and hybrid cloud integrations with Microsoft Azure and other providers. The Director will drive modernization initiatives that enables scalability, high availability, business continuity, and cost efficiency, while ensuring compliance with ITIL frameworks, institutional data governance policies, and federal security standards. This role requires close collaboration with campus Chief Information Officers, senior academic and administrative leadership, and technical teams across CUNY.

    Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

    + Provides strategic leadership and hands-on oversight for enterprise virtualization platforms (VMware VCF, Omnissa Horizon View, Nutanix AHV, Redhat Openshift), ensuring high performance, resiliency, and scalability across the university system.

    + Oversees key distribution of enterprise licensed virtualization products to campus IT leads and manages authorized users in the vendor portal.

    + Directs architecture, deployment, and lifecycle management of enterprise storage and backup solutions (SAN, NAS, vSAN, S3, Cohesity, Rubrik, etc.) with strong focus on disaster recovery, replication, and business continuity.

    + Leads infrastructure modernization initiatives, including migration and optimization of workloads across hybrid environments (on-premises, Azure, AWS, SaaS/IaaS).

    + Supervises automation and Infrastructure-as-Code practices (PowerShell, Azure Automation, Ansible, Terraform) to improve operational agility, provisioning, and patch compliance.

    + Ensures enterprise systems operate within ITIL and ITSM frameworks, maintaining service reliability, compliance with NIST/CIS standards, and alignment with institutional governance policies.

    + Manages diverse teams responsible for virtualization and storage, fostering professional growth and accountability.

    + Develops and executes long-term IT roadmaps to advance virtualization, storage, and platform services in support of digital transformation, academic excellence, and administrative efficiency.

    + Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to align technology investments with business priorities, while driving adoption of cloud-native and container-based solutions.

    + Maintains rigorous operational documentation, disaster recovery runbooks, and change management controls to ensure consistency, compliance, and resilience.

    NOTES:

    1. Until further notice, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

    2. **An appointment to this Competitive title/position in the Classified Civil Service Title Series will be made with a Provisional status. Employees in provisional status must pass a competitive civil service examination and be appointed from a civil service list to remain in the title/position.**

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Six (6) years of progressively responsible full-time paid information systems technology experience,at least eighteen (18) months of which shall have been in an **administrative or managerial capacity** in the areas of computer applications programming, systems programming, information systems development, data telecommunications, data base administration or a closely related area.

     

    Education at an accredited college or university may be substituted for the general information systems technology experience at the rate of one (1) year of college for six (6) months of experience up to a maximum of four (4) years of college for two (2) years of experience. In addition, a master’s degree in computer science or a closely related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for an additional year of the general information systems technology experience. However, all candidates must possess the eighteen (18) months of administrative or managerial experience described above.

     

    Experience in an **administrative capacity** must include, but is not limited to, responsibilities such as: monitoring an IT budget; reviewing and approving IT procurement and invoice payments; reviewing and approving contracts with vendors; monitoring and approving IT projects; setting standards and best practices; risk evaluation (e.g., security, reputational, operational); organizational development; chairing or participating in IT Governance and Advisory committees; and/or overseeing vendor relationship management.

     

    Experience in a **managerial capacity** must include, but is not limited to, responsibilities such as: strategic planning for an office/division; creating and implementing policies; setting standards and best practices; defining and documenting project scope; root cause analysis with recommendations; collaborating with other managers and executives to define future state of IT program; and/or forecasting.

     

    The following types of experience are **not** acceptable: superficial use of preprogrammed software without complex programming, design, implementation or management of the product; use of a word processing package; use of a hand-held calculator; data entry; operation of data processing hardware or consoles.

    OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

    Preferred:

    + 8+ years of progressive IT leadership experience, with a minimum of 3 years in enterprise virtualization, storage, or hybrid cloud platforms.

    + Advanced expertise in VMware VCF, NSX, vSAN, and strong knowledge of Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, RHEL Openshift or KVM.

    + Strong knowledge of physical and software defined networking protocols and architecture.

    + Proven success designing and managing enterprise storage and disaster recovery solutions, including backup/recovery, replication, and geo-diverse high-availability strategies.

    + Deep knowledge of Azure AD, ADFS, SAML, OAuth, and conditional access, with demonstrated success implementing SSO and identity governance.

    + Strong proficiency in automation and IaC (PowerShell, Azure Automation, Ansible, Terraform) for infrastructure provisioning, monitoring, and lifecycle management.

    + Familiarity with event monitoring and SIEM tools (Splunk, Palo Alto, Solarwinds) for proactive performance and security management.

    + Knowledge of ITIL best practices and experience operating within mature ITSM environments.

    + Demonstrated success leading enterprise-scale migrations, virtualization modernization, and cloud adoption projects in large, complex organizations.

    + Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to convey complex technical strategies in clear, business-focused terms.

    COMPENSATION

    The salary range is **$165,000** **– $172,800** **,** commensurate with credentials, education, and experience.
