Job Title: Lab Technician
Job Description
The primary purpose of this position is to prepare clinical specimens for laboratory testing. The role involves receiving, accessioning, aliquoting, and processing specimens, as well as setting up, maintaining, troubleshooting, and assisting in the validation of instruments. The technician will also be responsible for taking quality control measurements, including those pertaining to the environment, equipment/software, and product quality controls.
Responsibilities
+ Prepare clinical samples and products for testing, including accessioning and processing, following laboratory protocols.
+ Set up instruments for automated laboratory tasks, maintaining instruments, including reagent replenishment and cleaning.
+ Prepare reagents for the lab and change equipment supplies as needed.
+ Document and transcribe quality control measures, including environmental readings for the lab and equipment function checks.
+ Train backup staff and recommend necessary changes for improved workflow.
+ Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor or Laboratory Director.
+ Respond to emergency staffing situations as requested.
+ Assist or substitute for other lab members as needed.
+ Order, receive, and stock supplies, and perform laboratory maintenance.
+ Maintain sample inventories, including receipt, processing, storage, and disposal of samples.
+ Update computer databases for sample storage and correct data entry errors.
Essential Skills
+ Experience in hematology and chemical analysis.
+ Accessioning experience in a QC department.
+ Hands-on experience with sample handling, quantitative chemical analysis, assays, or equivalent procedures.
+ Proficiency in basic laboratory procedures such as weight and volume measurements, reagent preparation, pipetting, and centrifugation.
+ Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
+ Experience with operating laboratory instruments such as automated measurement instruments.
+ Critical thinking and ability to implement corrective actions.
+ Understanding and application of laboratory policies and procedures.
+ Attention to detail and ability to handle large numbers of samples accurately.
+ Effective communication skills in spoken and written English.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Minimum of 2 years college education or 4 years of college education in Chemistry, Biology, or Life Science preferred.
+ If holding an associate degree, 2 years of work experience is required.
+ If holding a bachelor's degree, a minimum of 6 months of lab-based experience in a hospital, clinical, or research setting is required.
+ Flexible schedule and ability to work varying shifts, including weekends.
Work Environment
The position is based in a fast-paced blood center within a QC department. Candidates will work closely with Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) and be involved in testing bloodwork for infectious disease and white blood cells. The role requires flexibility in scheduling, with a preference for evening shifts from 12pm to 8:30pm pm. The environment encourages growth within the organization, with opportunities for promotion and development, including the possibility to become a CLS.

This is a Contract position based out of Palo Alto, California.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $35.00/hr.
