    Job Summary

    The Division of Public Safety & Security (DPSS (https://umdearborn.edu/department-public-safety) ) announces the opportunity for qualified applicants to apply for the Deputy Chief of Police position on the UM-Dearborn Campus. In this position you will provide leadership, supervision, and direction for the day-to-day operations of the UM-Dearborn (UMD) Department of Public Safety (DPS). You will also provide guidance to UMD DPS in support of the DPSS mission, vision and values. In addition, you may be required to assume and exercise the duties of the Chief of Police as necessary.

     

    In this position you will provide supervision for public safety services to support the mission of the university as a partner serving to ensure a safe and secure environment while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working and visitation within our community.

     

    You will report directly to the University of Michigan-Dearborn Campus Chief of Police.

     

    *This position requires the candidate to successfully pass a thorough background investigation, drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination. This is a uniformed position required to maintain appearance and grooming standards in accordance with DPSS uniformed personnel dress code.*

    Responsibilities*

    + Duties include the supervision and coordination of department supervisors as well as the allocation of personnel and equipment in an efficient and effective manner to serve the UM-Dearborn community.

    + Serve as the assistant to the Chief of Police with responsibility for all department operations for the UM-Dearborn DPS.

    + Ensure adequate staffing on all shifts to deliver an effective public safety service to the UM-Dearborn community.

    + Address employee concerns, citizen complaints, and employee grievances.

    + Duties include but are not limited to patrol operations, criminal investigations, administrative functions, DPSS Senior Command Council member, and is a liaison with the UM-Dearborn community and local law enforcement agencies.

    + Ensure appropriate training and mentoring is provided to DPS staff.

    + Perform other duties and project assignments as necessary and as directed by the Chief of Police or the DPSS leadership.

    Skills You Have

    + Minimum of five years of law enforcement leadership experience.

    + Working knowledge of state and federal regulatory agencies, their laws, and enforcement.

    + Knowledge of current methods and technical phases of criminal investigations and patrol investigative techniques.

    + Prior experience with union staff and collective bargaining agreements.

    + A proven problem solver and critical thinker who can identify issues and appropriate resolutions.

    + Must be a champion of change and embrace the best practices of positive organizational scholarship.

    + Working knowledge of Microsoft office and Google applications.

    + Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to interact with diverse populations.

    + The proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies and diverse audiences, including other law enforcement agencies, community organizations, news media, and others.

    + Prior experience in campus law enforcement and Clery compliance preferred.

    + Successful completion of leadership training such as FBI NA, Police Staff and Command or other recognized leadership training.

    + Prior experience with strategic planning and budgeting.

    + Prior experience with management of law enforcement accreditation programs preferred.

    Licensure & Certification

    + MCOLES licensed, active or inactive.

    + Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record and exhibit the ability to operate motor vehicles.

     

    Modes of Work

    Additional Information

     

    All members of the Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) are considered campus security authorities (CSA's) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act.

     

    As such, you are required to report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

     

    Currently this classification will be considered exempt in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

     

    Background Screening

     

    The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background checks.

     

    Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Crediting Act.
