The Utility Mechanic I may be assigned to perform any responsibility that lies within the capability of the employee based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training. _*Scope of Responsibilities*_ Utility Mechanic I responsibilities may include, but are not limited to: • Coordinate, monitor, and control the safe and efficient utilization of Company equipment and assigned personnel. • Locate, access, operate, and repair Company facilities such as, but not limited to, mains, hydrants, blow-offs, services, curb stops, shutoff valves, plumbing fixtures, clean-outs and sewer openings. • Investigate and diagnose hydraulic variations that may adversely impact system operations and customer service and initiate corrective action. • Perform distribution system tests including, but not limited to, fire flows, customer service lines, pressure losses and electrical continuity. • Complete house-to-house connections at customers’ accounts to maintain service. • Locate Company facilities, and in accord with the Underground Facility Program, mark-out Company facilities and initiate requests to mark-out other utilities’ facilities and be capable of surveying the mark out prior to working. • Raise to grade Company facilities such as, but not limited to, meter pits, curb and valve boxes, sewer clean-outs and sewer openings. • Operate and repair Company facilities such as, but not limited to, fire hydrants and distribution system valves. • Complete the installation of facilities including, but not limited to, water services, main extensions, fire hydrants, valves, blow-offs, sewer services, and sewer mains in accordance with established electrical bonding practice. • Obtain and record meter readings to insure accurate billing of customers’ accounts within established timeframes. • Collect and evaluate process control samples, as directed, in accordance with established water quality and main break practices. • Transport materials to and from Company facilities and/or job sites. • Prepare Company facilities for adverse weather conditions. • Restore service to frozen Company facilities, as required. • Install and/or remove meters. • Turn off or turn on customer water services. • Comply with all training initiatives and directives. • Record pertinent data and maintain accurate records which will be turned in to the Company in a timely manner. Utilization of company systems, software programs, and devices as necessary to perform assigned duties. • Report conditions in the field that may adversely impact customer service or the public safety, as well as conditions that may result in potential damage to Company facilities. • Conduct water loss audits including, but not limited to, pipe and fixture inspections and usage patterns at customers’ accounts. • Respond to inquiries accurately and professionally and, when necessary, involve appropriate individuals to resolve customer and Company-related issues and to achieve the highest level of customer service in all areas of responsibility. • Actively monitor, review, acknowledge and respond to (as applicable) all company communications delivered via methods including, but not limited to, company intranet, emails, phone calls, text messages, Microsoft Teams messages, and/or handwritten or printed notes, memos, or reports. • Investigate and document customer side material, which may include visual in-house inspections, to comply with Lead Service Line Replacement Program. • Collect and evaluate process control samples, as directed, in accordance with established water quality and main break practices. _*Qualifications and Requirements*_ * The Utility Mechanic I must possess geographical knowledge of the Company’s service area and distribution system as well as an understanding of gradients, piping networks, basic fluid and flow principles, and basic electrical theory and related safety procedures. * The individual must be capable of interpreting diagrams, blueprints, schematics, and maps. * The individual must possess a working knowledge of the various materials utilized in the transmission and distribution system and possess the ability to properly and safely make necessary taps, restraints, and repairs to ensure the integrity of the transmission, distribution, and collection system. * The Utility Mechanic I must have a working knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and safety practices applicable to area of responsibility as well as federal regulations regarding confined spaces, trenching and shoring, electrical bonding, and Competent Person. * The individual must be detail oriented and capable of preparing and maintaining accurate records and documents. * The individual must be capable of operating Company equipment and vehicles necessary for the completion of assigned responsibilities and must obtain and possess a commercial driver’s license class “A” with appropriate endorsements. * The Utility Mechanic I’s will be required to pass a qualification examination to be developed by the Company prior to the end of the qualification period. Employees hired on or after October 15, 1996, will also be required to attend and successfully complete the NJDEP Introduction to Water/Wastewater course (180 hours). * The individual must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements of Utility Mechanic I. _ *Progression*_ The Utility Mechanic I will be required to progress to Level II. The Utility Mechanic I must progress to a Utility Mechanic II within 3 years. The Company may lessen the mandatory time period for progression at its discretion if the previous experience, qualifications, and licenses warrant. Utility Mechanic I must pass the Level II examination to be developed by the Company. Employees hired on or after October 15, 1996, will also be required to attend and successfully complete the NJDEP Introduction to Water/Wastewater course (180 hours) and pass the Level II examination to be developed by the Company. The Company may lessen the mandatory time period for progression at its discretion if the previous experience, qualifications, and licenses warrant.
