The M365 Copilot App Platform team provides the platform APIs, infrastructure and backend services for the Microsoft 365 Copilot app ( https://m365.cloud.microsoft ). Partner teams have built their AI-enabled experiences on our platform and depend on us for their success. We own the full technology stack - including application code, platform APIs, deployment pipelines, infrastructure, backend web server, and middle-tier services - supporting the app across web, Windows, and Mac environments.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated **Principal Software Engineer** to join our middle-tier service team within the M365 Copilot App Platform team. As a Principal Software Engineer, you will design, implement, and maintain scalable, secure, and reliable services that power AI-enabled experiences in Microsoft 365 Copilot across platforms. You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced agile environment to drive innovation and improve performance and quality. This opportunity will allow you to deepen your expertise in service infrastructure, automation, and operational excellence while contributing to a product that is central to Microsoft’s strategy in the AI space.

Responsibilities
+ Lead the design and implementation of new middle-tier features working with architects and other individual contributors.
+ Develop and maintain the middle-tier, APIs, deployment pipelines, and infrastructure.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams to enable the M365 Copilot app and drive innovation.
+ Work closely with partner teams to build new additional capabilities into our application.
+ Design, produce and deliver software to improve reliability, scalability, performance, security, efficiency, etc.
+ Opportunity for full-stack development work that spans our client app and middle-tier services.
+ Design and improve deployment, monitoring and recovery processes.
+ Apply metric-driven approach to improve service quality and reduce customer-impacting incidents
+ Monitor and maintain health of distributed services for high availability and resiliency.
+ Partner with product and platform teams to align service architecture with business goals and other Microsoft services.
+ Collaborate with software engineers to integrate reliability best practices into product design.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, JavaScript, TypeScript, or Python
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 6+ years of software engineering experience working on web services.
+ Demonstrated hands-on experience with C#/ASP.Net, node.js, or comparable backend technologies.
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
+ **Microsoft Cloud Background Check:** This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C#, JavaScript or Typescript,
+ OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, but not limited to, C#, JavaScript or Typescript
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ Experience with TypeScript for client-side application development.
+ Experience with TypeScript for client-side application development.
+ Ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
+ Effective communication and collaboration across cross-functional teams.
+ Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems using adaptable and innovative approaches.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
