    Main Purpose of Role

     

    The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing programs that promote compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other regulatory requirements while fostering a strong safety culture.

     

    This role partners with plant leadership and employees to reduce risk, improve safety performance, and ensure environmental compliance. This individual is also responsible for supporting and implementing the TEM Environmental Health and Safety strategy for their respective plants.

    Key Responsibilities

    + Role Model Behaviour: To be a consistent role model for safety within the plant and wider Alkegen organisation, championing safety as a core value, fostering a safety-conscious culture, and encouraging employee involvement and engagement in safety initiatives.

    + Systems Management: Responsible for the creation and implementation and ongoing management of the ISO45001 and the ISO14001 management systems.

    + Projects: Define, manage and sponsor EH&S improvement projects to improve workplace safety standards and reduce risks to employees.

    + Fibre Monitoring: Ensure the C.A.R.E and internal occupational dust and fibre monitoring programs are completed in line with the defined schedule, ensuring that are issues are rectified quickly.

    + Safety Program Development: Develop, implement, and maintain EH&S programs, policies, and procedures in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other federal, state, and local regulations

    + Communication and Cadence: Collaborate with plant teams to ensure that changes are effectively communicated and integrated into daily operations and that information reaches all employees effectively.

    + Risk Assessments & Safety Audits: Conduct thorough risk assessments and safety audits across the plant. Implement corrective actions to address any identified hazards, near misses, or workplace accidents promptly.

    + Training : To oversee the scheduling, record keeping, development and delivery of safety training programs for employees and line managers.

    + Incident Investigation and Reporting: To lead investigations into workplace accidents, incidents, injuries, and near misses to determine root causes and develop and ensure the implementation of corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence.

    + Emergency Response & Preparedness: Develop and lead emergency preparedness plans for several scenarios including, fires, spills, medical emergencies, power outages and ensuring the coordination of safety drills and ensuring that emergency response procedures are up to date and well-communicated.

    + Behavioural Safety: Foster a culture of safety first within the plant through employee engagement, safety awareness campaigns, and regular training.

    + Zero Tolerance: Proactively and robustly challenge unsafe behaviours on site, promoting a culture of accountability and safety excellence through consistent enforcement of standards and constructive engagement with employees at all levels of the plant.

    + Legal Compliance: Ensure full legal and regulatory compliance across all Environmental Health and Safety domains by implementing policies, monitoring adherence to regulations, and taking prompt action to address any gaps or non-conformities including ensuring the preparation and submission of regulatory reports (OSHA logs, EPA filings, etc.) accurately and on time.

    + Employee Engagement: To set up an on site health and safety committee comprised of management and employee representatives to review safety performance, address concerns, and collaborate on safety initiatives and provide updates on projects.

    + Personal Protective Equipment: To oversee the selection, maintenance, and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment, ensuring that employees have access to the appropriate protective equipment for their tasks.

    + Environmental Compliance: Ensure compliance with environmental laws, local regulations and national regulations such as ISO14001, EPA, and local environmental authorities. This includes managing environmental permits, reporting emissions, waste management, and energy use.

    + Sustainability Initiatives: Champion initiatives to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint, waste, water consumption, and energy usage. Develop sustainability programs focused on continuous improvement and innovation in environmental performance.

    + Environmental Audits: Manage internal and external environmental audits, ensuring readiness and successful completion of certification or compliance assessments.

    + Occupational Health: Oversee the management of employee occupational health inspections, ensuring the correct health surveillance inspects are completed, reports are handled confidentially and appropriately, and that recommended actions are implemented effectively to support employee wellbeing and regulatory compliance.

    + Reporting and Key Performance Indicators: Populate required reports with accurate information, track performance and trends and implement the required improvements.

    + Regulatory Updates: To stay current with evolving Environmental, Health and Safety regulations, standards, and industry best practices.

    Coaching and Development:

    + Influences Others: Becomes trusted across the organisation, influence key stakeholders by combining data, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of others’ motivations.

    + Performance Management: Assist with setting EH&S performance objectives for the Site Leadership Team and line managers.

    + Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with manufacturing engineering, maintenance, and supply chain and performance improvement to ensure EH&S standards are embedded throughout the organisation and that operational goals align with compliance objectives.

    + Inspirational Leadership: Inspire a culture of ownership, encourage others to take responsibility for their work, and to consistently deliver reliable results that enable trust from team members.

     

    Essential Qualifications and Skills

     

    + Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).

    + 10+ years of progressive management/leadership experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety management, preferably in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, chemical, or biotech industries.

    + Can demonstrate strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations, with proven ability to ensure compliance across multiple sites.

    + Demonstrated experience of conducting risk assessments, incident investigations, and implementing sustainable corrective and preventive actions.

    + Demonstrates a high proficiency in developing and delivering safety training programs for employees at all levels.

    + Demonstrates experience in leading regulatory audits and inspections (OSHA, EPA, ISO, or other relevant standards).

    + Certified Lead Auditor for ISO14001 and ISO45001 standards

    + Can demonstrate experience of implementing and management both ISO14001 and ISO45001 management systems.

    + Demonstrates strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence and engage employees at all levels of the organization.

    + Ability to analyze data, prepare reports, and recommend improvements to reduce risk and improve safety culture.
