Job Summary
The Surgical Technologist I is a vital member of the perioperative team, working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role supports surgical procedures by applying principles of asepsis, preparing the operating room, assisting with patient positioning, and anticipating the needs of the surgical team. The technologist adheres to AORN and AST standards and demonstrates Trinity Health’s core values in all interactions.
Key Responsibilities
+ Maintain sterile technique and correct any breaks in asepsis during procedures.
+ Prepare operating rooms with appropriate instruments, supplies, and equipment.
+ Assist with patient positioning and transport pre-, intra-, and post-operatively.
+ Anticipate surgical team needs and efficiently pass instruments and supplies.
+ Maintain accurate counts of sponges, needles, and instruments with RN circulator.
+ Handle specimens appropriately and communicate with the circulating nurse.
+ Participate in cleaning, stocking, and sterilization of OR instruments and supplies.
+ Support orientation and education of new surgical staff and students.
+ Document care and procedures using electronic health records.
+ Participate in quality improvement initiatives and trial of new surgical products.
+ Ensure compliance with safety, confidentiality, and ethical standards.
Qualifications
+ Graduate of an approved Surgical Technologist program or equivalent experience.
+ Associate’s Degree in Surgical Technology preferred.
+ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
+ AST certification preferred.
+ Minimum 18 months of operating room experience preferred.
+ Ability to lift/push/pull up to 30 pounds and stand/walk for extended periods.
+ Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
Work Environment
+ Surgical suite and related areas.
+ Exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous substances.
+ May require weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.
