The State Library offers specialized services to Louisiana residents of all ages who are visually impaired, legally blind, have reading disabilities, or are unable to handle traditional books through the Talking Books and Braille Library, a special library-within-a library.
An affiliate of the Library of Congress'sNational Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (http://www.loc.gov/nls/) , TBBL provides access to more than 164,000 audio and braille books, 25,000 large-print books, and playback machines to anyone with permanent or temporary disabilities.
Reader advisors help patrons select materials. Additionally, TBBL dedicates a staff member to serve children up to age 18, allowing them to participate in statewide summer reading programs. There is no charge for TBBL, and more than 6,000 Louisianans use the service.
This position reports to the Reader Advisory Unit for the Talking Books and Braille Library (TBBL). This position serves as a reader advisor; opens and sorts incoming mail; and helps with TBBL outreach projects. This job duty is unique in that it provides specialized service to the blind, visually impaired and physically handicapped as well as dyslexic. All Reader Advisors work closely together and support each other, answering incoming telephone calls in a rotating pattern and assisting patrons as needed. This position requires excellent communication skills, teamwork and the ability to multitask.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of experience in administrative services.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 15 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for six months of the required experience.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
+ Delivers personalized reader advisory servicesby assisting patrons one-on-one, developing and maintaining individual reading profiles in the KLAS database based on interests, preferences, and sensitivities, and selecting appropriate reading materials to ensure ongoing, customized service.
+ Manages patron records and communicationsby updating KLAS information (addresses, name/status changes, requests), maintaining active reading queues, and handling statewide telephone and mail correspondence related to book, magazine, and equipment requests.
+ Provides technical and circulation supportby assisting patrons with DA2 machines and BARD mobile apps, resetting passwords, circulating large-print and special materials, and ensuring smooth access to library resources and publications.
+ Supports library operations and outreachby assisting walk-in patrons, forwarding inquiries, helping organize exhibits, displays, and community events, and participating in outreach projects, including book festivals and promotional activities.
+ Contributes to administrative and team functionsby processing mail, ordering and maintaining supplies, training student workers, maintaining publication storage areas, conducting inventories, and performing other duties as assigned by supervisors.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This is a probational appointment; current classified employees may be required to accept a probational appointment.
Work Schedule:The Office of State Library is open to the public Monday-Thursday from 10:00 AM-2:00 PM. This position reports in-office.
