Description
This position in the Zoning Section of the Department of Community Development is responsible for conducting review of zoning applications of varying complexity. This position works directly with landowners, applicants, consultants, and other county staff with a wide range of expertise to review, analyze, and make recommendations relative to land use and development in unincorporated Lee County. The ideal candidate will be well-organized, will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and will have the ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative.
The Zoning Section is responsible for administering the Lee County Land Development Code and coordinating the review and analysis of applications for rezoning, special exceptions, and variances. The Zoning Section also administers the County’s Historic Preservation Program, prepares periodic amendments to the Land Development Code, and provides technical assistance to the County’s customer base.

Duties and Responsibilities
+ Completes technical review and analysis of administrative and public hearing zoning applications for compliance with the requirements of the Land Development Code and consistency with the Lee County Comprehensive Plan (the Lee Plan).
+ Analyzes zoning applications, prepares draft resolutions for administrative zoning actions, and produces thorough and well-reasoned staff reports for public hearing zoning actions.
+ Presents staff recommendations on public hearing zoning actions to the Hearing Examiner and Board of County Commissioners.
+ Assists with maintaining, updating and implementing the requirements of the Land Development Code and comprehensive plan.
+ Prepares, with attention to detail, written reports, graphics, maps, charts, tables and other visuals.
+ Maintains effective working relationships and provides customer service and technical assistance to landowners, applicants, consultants and other county staff.
+ Conducts research and analysis on various planning- and zoning-related topics and provides technical assistance to the Department's customer base.
+ Attends, presents, and participates in public meetings, providing assistance to other staff as assigned.
+ Performs other related duties as required.
Work is evaluated under the general direction of a supervisor and the section manager, who review progress with an eye toward attaining mutually-established goals and objectives and providing mentorship to facilitate professional development.
Education, Experience, Licensing
+ Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an Associate’s Degree in planning or a closely related field and two years of urban planning, or closely related experience.
+ Experience in land use, zoning, environmental planning, and/or historic preservation planning preferred.
+ Public speaking experience preferred, with the ability to effectively present planning information to a variety of audiences.
Supplemental Information
+ Ability to independently identify practical solutions to vaguely defined, complex zoning issues.
+ Proficient use of computer software (including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS) with attention to detail regarding format and content.
+ Strong writing skills; ability to effectively convey complex regulatory requirements to a wide audience.
+ Ability to manage several projects/assignments simultaneously.
+ Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
+ Knowledge and ability to research, interpret, and apply local, state and federal regulations.
+ The work days and hours are Monday-Friday 7:30 am - 4:30 pm.
