The State of Connecticut (http://ct.gov/) , Department of Correction ( DOC (http://ct.gov/doc) ) Unified School District #1 is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Building Trades instructor to teach vocational education at Osborn Correctional Institution in Somers, CT.
Instruction is delivered through applied learning methodology and work-based learning experiences that prepare students for careers in this field. This course is designed so students will learn personal development, leadership and employability skills. The program and course sequence are part of a rigorous program of study that includes sufficient technical challenges to meet state and industry-standards.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
+ SCHEDULE: first-shift, full time (35 hours per week,) Monday through Friday
+ LOCATION : Osborn Correctional Institution (https://portal.ct.gov/doc/facility/osborn-ci) (Somers, CT)
+ NOTE: Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar.
+ TRAINING: Candidates selected for hire, are required to attend a fourteen (14) week training at the CT DOC Training Academy. More details can be found in the 'Selection Plan' of this job bulletin.
Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. State of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:
+ Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
+ Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
+ Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
+ Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
+ Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
+ Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
+ Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
+ Maintaining student records and writing reports; and
+ Modeling positive teaching practices.

+ Experience with different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.

+ Candidates selected for hire will be required to attend a 14-week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT. This training consists of both classroom and on the job training (one day of classroom presentation and nine days of “hands-on” physical training.) The Behavior Management Program training will education on the use of physical force as it applies to self-defense, and the maintenance of order and security within the inmate population. In order to graduate, trainees will be required to pass a written exam, as well as a practical skills test which will be scored.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction School District vocational education section and the Department of Children and Families this class provides instruction and supervision in vocational and occupational subjects to a group of inmates and/or residents.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
+ Plans and conducts a vocational program in accordance with curriculum established for vocational education developed under guidelines established by the State Department of Education-Division of Vocational Education;
+ Conducts classes and shop sessions in vocational and occupational subjects;
+ Corrects papers and tests;
+ Counsels inmates and/or students and gives individual instruction;
+ Maintains tools and equipment;
+ Attends staff and other professional meetings;
+ Prepares reports on inmates and/or students as required;
+ Performs all the security functions necessary to maintain safety of inmates and/or students, associates and other members of the institution populations;
+ Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
+ Knowledge of educational principles, methods and techniques;
+ Skill in a particular trade or occupation;
+ Ability to
+ work effectively with inmates and/or students;
+ express ideas simply and clearly, orally and in writing;
+ teach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
High School graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the subject field.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Incumbents in this class must meet the State Board of Education requirements to receive initial educator certificate to teach Vocational Education.
NOTE: Payment for employees on the extended schedule will be determined by the appropriate contract.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Ability to get the Endorsement: 098 Trade & Industrial Occupations – Comprehensive High School;
+ Experience working in a leadership or training capacity;
+ Experience working in a correctional institution setting;
+ Experience with teaching or training a diverse group of people;
+ Experience teaching or training groups of people with differing levels of education;
+ Experience in training workplace safety;
+ Experience in training Drafting and/or Architectural Drawing;
+ Experience in training Introduction to Carpentry; and
+ Experience training Building Construction including, roofing, electrical, plumbing, masonry, flooring, HVACR maintenance, and painting.
