Position Summary
CVS Health is on the lookout for a highly skilled and experienced Principal Engineer to lead the architectural vision, design and implementation of innovative, patient-focused solutions. This critical role demands extensive expertise in the Salesforce platform—particularly Health Cloud, Sales Cloud, and Service Cloud—alongside robust full-stack development skills within the Azure and Java/J2EE ecosystems.
As a key leader, you will play a vital role in defining the technical direction for integrated platforms like EMRs such as Epic that enhance sales operations, customer service, patient acquisition, engagement, and overall experience, driving forward-thinking solutions in the dynamic healthcare sector. You enjoy working in agile teams to deliver API-led integration solutions and are excited to learn and integrate to new business applications while ensuring best practices and following Salesforce’s guiding principals.
This role has been opened as a Remote position but could be hybrid depending on proximity to a regional office. Under 10% travel may be required.
The ideal candidate will be familiar with all phases of Salesforce SDLC and have experience in designing, coding, testing, and consistently managing applications, establishing consistent, reliable engineering productivity.
Key Responsibilities:
• Architectural Leadership & Strategy: Collaborate closely with the Enterprise Architecture (EA) team to establish the strategic direction for platform solutions. Lead the development of conceptual architecture models and high-level technical designs (HLTDs) that align with HCD (CVS Health Care Delivery) Domain technology standards and business goals.
• Salesforce Cloud Leadership: Act as the technical expert for major Salesforce implementations, specifically leveraging Salesforce Health Cloud for clinical processes, Sales Cloud for sales and lead management, and Service Cloud for patient/member support to optimize Lead Management, Patient Acquisition, and enhance Patient Experience and Engagement.
• Salesforce Platform Development: Oversee hands-on development and guide engineering teams in creating highly scalable, resilient, and secure applications utilizing the Salesforce platform, including Apex programming, Flows, and Administration. Understanding SFDC best practices and guiding principles is a must.
• Integration Layer Development: Lead the development of scalable integrations using Java/J2EE Spring Boot services and IPAAS tools such as Workato, while guiding engineering teams in best practices.
• Cloud Architecture & Security: Design and implement cloud-native applications and services on the Microsoft Azure platform, ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA) and security standards.
• Integration & Data Architecture: Architect and implement complex integrations using real-time and event-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka, Azure Event Hubs) to connect Salesforce with core enterprise systems. Oversee the technical design of data ingestion pipelines to ensure high-quality, actionable data for patient care, sales/service insights, and business intelligence.
• Logging and Monitoring: Implement and manage Java logging frameworks such as Grafana and Prometheus to ensure effective monitoring and observability of applications, services and error handling.
• Containerization and Orchestration: Utilize Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) for deploying, managing, and scaling containerized applications, ensuring high availability and performance.
• Mentorship & Governance: Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and code reviews to engineering teams, ensuring adherence to design patterns, best practices, and enterprise architectural standards.
Required Qualifications
• Experience: 10+ years of progressive software engineering experience, with a minimum of 5+ years in a Principal/Staff Engineer or Architecture-focused role.
• Enterprise Architecture Expertise: Demonstrated experience collaborating with the Enterprise Architecture team, including leading the development of conceptual architecture and high-level technical designs (HLTDs) for large-scale enterprise solutions.
• Salesforce Proficiency: In-depth knowledge of the Salesforce platform, including:
o Implementation, configuration, and customization of Salesforce Health Cloud, Sales Cloud, and Service Cloud.
o Apex classes, triggers, flows and Visualforce/Lightning Web Components (LWC) development.
o Utilize ETL tools architecture to integrate across systems used in the organization
o Complex process automation using Flows.
o Extensive experience with Salesforce administration, security models, and deployment best practices.
o Experience in building operational reports within Salesforce.
o Exposure to Copado tool for building Salesforce CI/CD pipelines.
o Experience functioning in a multi Salesforce instance organization
o Strong experience working with Salesforce APIs and ability to manage integration with enterprise systems
o Building integration between salesforce and external application using Outbound Messaging, REST / SOAP API, OAuth and SSO
• Enterprise Technology Skills:
o Strong proficiency in Java/J2EE and microservices architecture (e.g., Java/J2ee/Spring Boot).
o Experience building and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure or other major cloud platforms (GCP/AWS).
o Familiarity with DevOps tools such as GitHub Actions for deploying Java/J2ee apps.
o Understanding of Webservices standards and technologies such as: WS*, JSON, REST, GraphQL etc.
o Understanding of structured and/or unstructured databases and data models like MS SQL, My SQL, Postgress, Mongo DB, Hadoop, etc.
o Experience in delivering real-time, event-driven, and batch integration solutions
o Background in data architecture, design, and data modeling
• Integration and Data Expertise:
o Proven experience in designing and implementing integrations using real-time and event-driven architectures, including Kafka.
o Familiarity with data ingestion pipelines, ETL/ELT processes, and enterprise data modeling/architecture principles.
o Familiarity with data platforms for analytical and operational reporting.
• Healthcare Knowledge: Strong understanding of the healthcare ecosystem and critical processes, including Lead Management, Patient Acquisition, and enhancing Patient Experience and Engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
Desired Certifications: (At least one of the following)
• Salesforce Platform Developer I
• Salesforce Certified Admin
• Salesforce Certified Platform Developer II
Preferred Qualifications :
• EHR Integration Experience: Familiarity with EPIC or other major Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, particularly regarding integration patterns and data exchange.
• Multi-Cloud Experience: Knowledge or hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services and infrastructure.
• Salesforce Certifications: Salesforce Certified Platform Integration Architect (Formerly Integration Architecture Designer), Salesforce System Architect, Salesforce Application Architect).
• Clinical Data Standards: Familiarity with clinical data standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7 v2).

Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$144,200.00 - $288,400.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
