The Office of the Dean of the Graduate College invites nominations (including self-nominations) for the next Director of the Food Systems Graduate Program ( FSGP ). This internal search is open to all members of the UVM regular Graduate Faculty affiliated with the program. The Director reports to the Dean of the Graduate College. While a three-year term is expected, directors are reappointed annually. The initial appointment will become effective no later than January 1, 2026. For faculty in CAS and CALS , the effort for this 12-month, non-salaried appointment would be compensated with one course release (or 0.1. FTE faculty time) per academic year and one month summer salary. For a Director whose faculty appointment is in another academic unit, the effort acknowledgment would be guided by standard practice in their academic unit and expectations of the Graduate College.
The Director leads the strategic and programmatic activities of the FSGP and oversees its daily operations with the support of program staff and in collaboration with FSGP committees. In coordination with the Dean of the Graduate College, and in collaboration with the FSGP community, the Director identifies and implements an innovative strategic direction for the program, aligned with the Graduate College’s strategic priorities for transdisciplinary programs in the Graduate College and its focus on student-centric, inclusive, data-informed, outcomes-focused, and career diverse graduate education. The Director will be a collaborative leader who consults widely, works effectively with the Steering Committee, program support staff, and Graduate College leadership and staff, and implements program priorities effectively. A student-centered leader, the Director will advocate effectively for students’ needs and aspirations. They will mobilize the diverse perspectives and contributions of affiliated faculty across academic disciplines, including extension faculty, in support of the program’s inter- and transdisciplinary identity.
The Director’s specific responsibilities include:
- oversee the program’s operations in collaboration with the Steering Committee, to include curricular oversight; recruitment, admissions, and student financial support; and tracking student progress
- collaborate with the Graduate College to identify an Associate Director to support program needs
- oversee the responsibilities of program administrative staff in collaboration with the AD, Graduate College-advise and mentor first-year students
- lead the program to grow enrollment and funding mechanisms (e.g., Ph.D. Fellowships, GRAs)
- oversee design, delivery, and evaluation of a robust, cutting-edge curriculum
- foster a culture of excellence in the mentoring of graduate students from various backgrounds, lived experiences, and worldviews
- collaborate with the Graduate College to enhance student professional development and career preparation
- foster community among program students, faculty, and staff
- ensure effective communication between the Graduate College, program leadership, and program constituencies, including with regard to program requirements and student resources
- assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of the Graduate College
Candidates with experience as demonstrably effective mentors of graduate students and those with appropriate academic leadership experience at the program, department, college, and/or university levels will receive the strongest consideration.

Anticipated Pay Range
