    Course Description

    TheLSA Department of Women's and Gender Studies (https://lsa.umich.edu/content/michigan-lsa/wgs/en.html) has GSI positions for the Winter 2026 term to lead discussion sections for a faculty-led lecture inWGS - 270 (Gender and the Law). (https://webapps.lsa.umich.edu/cg/cg\_detail.aspx?content=2570WGS270001&termArray=w\_26\_2570) This course is cross-listed in Sociology.

    Responsibilities*

    Successful applicants will teach three discussion sections of 25 students each for WGS 270 under the direction of the course instructor for a 50% GSI appointment. The duties of this appointment will also include grading (per lead faculty instruction), attending all lectures, holding weekly office hours, responding promptly to emails, and leading discussion sections as scheduled, which may include development of some independent lesson plans. Responsibilities also include meeting regularly with the lead instructor and engaging with the teaching team to ensure students receive a unified theory of the course across lectures and discussion sections. Additional duties and responsibilities as outlined in the fraction calculation form. Note that both lecture and discussion sections are scheduled as in-person instruction. Please note that the employment obligations of this position include attendance at a mandatory GSI orientation the week of January 5th and instructional team meetings the week of January 5th.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Enrolled in good standing as a graduate student at the University of Michigan.

    + Available to attend all lectures and to teach the scheduled section times.

    + If the language of instruction at a student's undergraduate institution was not English, they must be evaluated by theEnglish Language Institute (https://lsa.umich.edu/eli) (ELI) for English proficiency and either pass theGSI-OET (https://me.engin.umich.edu/academics/graduate/handbook/international/#GSI-Oral-English-Test) or have this test waived by the ELI before they can be eligible for a GSI appointment in LS&A.

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Strong preference for applicants with prior teaching experience, some pedagogical training, and some familiarity with course topics. Course topics include such legal concepts as coverture, federalism, rights frameworks, conceptualization of citizenship, Title VII claims, employment law, 14th Amendment equal protection and due process, anti-miscegenation law, constitutional torts, Title IX, and Tribal law.

    + Applicants with demonstrated research or advocacy work in areas such as state or interpersonal violence, employment discrimination, reproductive justice, immigration, LGBTQIA2S+ law, community organizing, local government interactions, carceral studies, or restorative justice practices are also encouraged to apply.

    + WGS 270 meets the undergraduate Race & Ethnicity requirement. Applicants should be confident and experienced in helping students engage in topics they might find difficult or polarizing.

    + Experience with Canvas.

    + Previous experience teaching courses in WGS, SOC, or law-focused courses is desired.

    + Previous experience as a GSI is desired.
