Summary of the Position
A z/OS systems programmer is responsible for the installation, customization, maintenance, and support of the IBM z/OS mainframe operating system and its associated hardware and software. They ensure the system is stable, secure, and performs optimally to meet an organization's critical business needs.
Key responsibilities and daily tasks include:
+ System Installation and Upgrades: Installing, patching, and upgrading the z/OS operating system, third-party software, and associated subsystems like CICS, JES2, TCP/IP, and security software (RACF) using tools like IBM's SMP/E.
+ Performance Monitoring and Tuning: Monitoring the performance of workloads and the system as a whole using diagnostic tools like SMF and RMF, and making adjustments to optimize efficiency and throughput.
+ Troubleshooting and Problem Resolution: Diagnosing and resolving complex software and hardware problems, which may involve analyzing system logs and dumps, and collaborating with other IT teams and vendors.
+ Hardware Management: Managing mainframe hardware configuration, including storage systems (DFSMS, DFHSM) and CPU installation using tools like HCD (Hardware Configuration Definition).
+ Automation and Scripting: Developing and maintaining automation scripts (often using REXX or CLIST) to streamline workflows and automate routine operational tasks.
+ Disaster Recovery: Planning, executing, and documenting disaster recovery procedures and exercises to ensure data and system recovery capabilities.
+ Security Management: Implementing and managing security policies and privileges to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with security standards.
+ Documentation and Collaboration: Creating and updating technical documentation, and working closely with application developers, operators, security teams, and management to support business initiatives and new application deployments.
+ On-Call Support: Providing off-hour and weekend support for production implementations and critical incidents to ensure high system availability.
Description
This person will be responsible for designing, installing, programming, and maintaining complex system software.
Major responsibilities of the role are:
1. Maintain up-to-date knowledge about systems software supplied by the manufacturer.
2. Analyze current system software; proposed modifications; and new software for impact on installation problems, standards, and procedures.
3. Implement new systems software and modifications without adverse effect on current production and testing and with minimal impact on systems under development.
4. Establish standards for development, maintenance, and use of software.
5. Identify requirements for customized software and directing the acquisition or development of appropriate packages.
6. Create and follow procedures to ensure that software within the environment remains up to date and secure.
7. Evaluate performance of software and initiate actions for improvements.
8. Advise other teams regarding the resources required for projects during planning.
9. Plan and conduct training courses for junior staff members, as well as staff from other teams as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
Qualifications:
1. Four-year degree and at least eight years IS Experience including four years in Systems Programming // OR // Two-year technical degree and at least ten years IS experience including four years in Systems Programming // OR // Equivalent combination of education and experience including four years in Systems Programming.
2. Thorough knowledge of the design, programming, installation, and maintenance of computer software, training techniques, and the establishment of software standards.
3. Experience with zSeries software including z/OS, CICS, and DB2.
4. Experience working with and administering Linux systems on Z (z/VM & KVM).
5. Ability to plan and use time wisely.
6. Ability to communicate, solve problems, and write clear instructions.
7. Knowledge or experience with AT-TLS is beneficial.
8. Knowledge or experience with BMC Control-M is beneficial.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Raleigh, NC.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $57.50/hr.
