    Job description:

    COMPENSATION

    The estimated hourly range for this position is between $30 and $35/hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Additional compensation includes: $250.00 for each 2-day weekend worked ($125/weekend day or Holiday), and a minimum of 4 hours paid at your regular hourly rate for any call-ins that occur after hours.

    SUMMARY:

    A minimum of a Low Pressure 2nd Class C Boiler License is required for this position.

     

    Operates boilers and assumes responsibility of the boilers, their mechanical condition and safe operation and efficiencies when chief engineer is off-site during heating season. Service boiler and heating/steam system during summer months when boilers are not in use. Responsible for boiler housekeeping, inspection, chemical testing and steam system chemical adjustments, maintenance and repair of boiler and steam systems. Maintains employee communications concerning any repairs needed, production records associated with boiler requirements and supports company goals.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Reads, retains and implements information from all plant safety and boiler equipment manuals and procedures, including electrical lock out-tag out procedures, the correct starting and stopping of boilers, and the use of firefighting equipment and their locations.

     

    Learn all aspects of the fire protection system throughout all buildings.

     

    Be able to work with and communicate with the supervisor and other members of the maintenance team and chief engineer to accomplish assigned work.

     

    Know how to follow precise instructions for the assigned work and repairs.

     

    Draw from memory the name and location of each production department, the department supervisor, and key boiler and steam system equipment.

     

    Learn to use the boiler computer program that controls boiler and heating system.

     

    Read and perform measurements using control equipment and testing instruments such as boiler controls, lab and chemical test equipment for boiler water treatment and steam system.

     

    Completes production reports indicating boiler performance.

     

    Learn and maintain the complete steam system; including, unit heater, fire sprinkler valves and fire pump system.

     

    Clean/service boiler and steam lines during summer months for inspection before heating season.

     

    Identify boiler/auger steam system equipment parts by description and be able to find the reference materials to order parts needed.

     

    Be able to locate, remove, and replace defective boiler/auger/steam system parts.

     

    Know basic safety procedures including the use of hydraulic lift equipment, ladders and similar devises used for maintenance operations on heating system that are elevated from the floor.

     

    Performs daily documentation of boiler readings and fire suppression system/pump house gauges. Performs weekend complete plant walk through inspecting for leaks or hazards and reporting all malfunctions and hazards to chief engineer.

     

    Troubleshoot, isolate defects, locate problems, correct, adjust, and repair boiler equipment.

     

    Remove and install bearings/augers on boiler feed system, using standard hand tools and mechanical hydraulic pullers, hydraulic presses, and similar devices.

     

    Maintain a clean and safe work area and report any unsafe conditions or machinery to the department supervisor.

     

    Be able to disassemble/reassemble boiler and boiler feed system and heating system/unit heaters/steam trap and steam trap components.

     

    Operates forklift on occasion, forklift certification to be obtained on site.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Must have good math skills, ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

     

    Must have the skills and ability to do the various tasks associated with repairs on boilers and heating systems. Knowledge in the use of measuring equipment such as tape measures, calipers, rulers, squares, temperature and pressure gauges and any other instruments necessary to determine a standard of measure.

     

    Must have good problem-solving skills, mechanical aptitude and equipment knowledge.

    EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

    Highschool diploma or general education degree (GED); and 2 years job related experience and/or training.

     

    A minimum of a Low Pressure 2nd Class C Boiler License is required.

     

    Experience with solid fuel desired, but not required.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, drive, use fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must regularly lift and or move weights up to 75 pounds, climb up and down from forklifts, ladders and silo. Specific vision abilities are required by this job. Must be able to work at various heights, in constricting spaces, and in awkward positions.

    REQUIREMENTS:

    • Mechanically skilled.

    • Good reading and writing skills.

    • Must have problem solving skills and the ability to follow instructions with precision.

    • Knowledgeable in the use of tape measure, calculator, and basic computer functions.

    • The ability to work independently and directly with supervisor.

    • Good communication skills.

    • Self-motivated, quality conscious, and positive attitude.

    • Good attendance and punctuality.

    • Must have a valid Low Pressure 2nd Class C Boiler License

    • The ability to work overtime when necessary; and when called in after hours, and scheduled weekends.

    • Must have the ability to perform the physical demands of the job.

    • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen
