Summary:
Performs ultrasonic recordings for the diagnosis of disease and is responsible for patient safety protocols. Functions as the first line interface with patients in the successful accomplishments of their imaging needs .
Responsibilities:
1. EQUIPMENT a. Responsible for the utilization of US equipment to insure care and safety of patients undergoing treatment and the use of equipment. b. Responsible for the safe operation of equipment and images. c. Selects appropriate equipment to use for procedures. d. Exhibits skill sets to demonstrate proper use of equipment e. Demonstrates knowledge of troubleshooting. f. Comprehends and completes the established quality control on equipment
2. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS a. Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department. b. Represents the hospital in a positive and professional manner. c. Adheres and upholds PEOPLE standards according to the hospital d. Shows compassion and kindness toward patients and family members. e. Interacts professionally and effectively communicates with peers, physicians, patients, visitors and guests. f. Participates in programs/committees beneficial to departmental, hospital and health system improvement.
3. EDUCATION a. Possess knowledge and exhibits competency of procedures performed in the department and is able to appropriately respond to questions/concerns the patient or family may have. b. Must attend all mandatory in-services and staff meetings to maintain competency training. c. Assists in the training of students and ancillary personnel. d. Must complete annual CPR certification. e. Completes annual educational requirements
4. CLINICAL a. Instructs and prepares patients for Ultrasound examinations. b. Practices medical and surgical aseptic procedures. c. Assesses patient’s understanding of process and informed consent of invasive procedures. d. Assesses, evaluates and informs physician of changes in patient’s conditions during exam. e. Selects a transducer and adjusts the equipment controls according to the organ to be examined, the depth of the field and other specifications of test. f. Moves transducer, by hand, over specified area of the body and observes sound wave display screen to monitor quality of ultrasonic pattern produced. g. Evaluates clinical history and consults with Radiologist/referring physician to determine appropriate study. h. Produces adequate studies in a quick and efficient manner. i. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, geriatric and general population. j. Adheres to Ultrasound procedures/protocols
5. CLERICAL a. Efficiently operates the RIS and PACS system b. Exhibits superior phone skills c. Assists in maintaining basic records and reports d. Assists in maintaining files e. Maintains patients confidentiality at all times f. Provides proper documentation for patient exams. For example: Orders, pregnancy, allergies, mobility, diagnosis, DOB, referring physician
6. MANAGEMENT a. Possess knowledge of hospital policies and the functions of the other departments. b. Completes all work before leaving. c. Meets dress code standards: appearance is neat and clean d. Maintains regulatory requirements e. Reports to work on time as scheduled; completes work assignments within designated times f. Consistently completes and maintains assigned duties g. Attends annual review and departmental inservices and meetings as scheduled. h. Wears identification badge while on duty i. Maintains a clean work area j. Maintains consistent work flow k. Maintains par levels for inventory and supplies
7. PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT a. Performs quality control on required equipment. b. Actively participates in performance improvement and continues quality improvement activities
8. SAFETY a. Demonstrates and maintains rules and regulations of TJC and the State of Pennsylvania b. Adheres to safety program of Pennsylvania Hospital and the Department of Radiology c. Is aquatinted with local fire and safety regulations
Uses effective communication skills in all interactions
Performs duties and exhibits behaviors consistent with care philosophy of Pennsylvania Hospital
Performs all other duties as assigned
Credentials:
+ New employees must be eligible by the ARDMS and certified in Physics and Abdomen or OB/GYN within one year from date of hire.
+ Within year two of date of hire employee must acquire second certification in either Abdomen or OB/GYN which was not obtained in year one.
+ Must maintain continuing education credits for certification.
+ Current CPR certification required.
Education or Equivalent Experience:
Graduation from an accredited training program in Diagnostic Ultrasound and eligible for registration by ARDMS required.
