    The Health Sciences Academic Services and Facilities’ (HSAS&F), Scientific Instruments (SI) unit has opportunities for a Biomedical Electronics Technician 1.

     

    SI provides services that support patient care, laboratory and research equipment for University, state, federal and other publicly funded agencies. Services include technology management, regulatory compliance, preventive maintenance, routine or emergency repairs, and design and prototype development. SI is a self-sustaining unit. Major customers include UW Medical Center, Laboratory Medicine, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, UW Physicians Neighborhood Clinics, Harborview Medical Center and NW Hospital.

     

    The BMET 1 will perform entry-level Biomedical Electronics work such as troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, installing, testing and calibrating a variety of analog, digital and electromechanical instruments used in healthcare, clinical laboratories and medical research.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    Under direct supervision, troubleshoot, repair, maintain, install, test and calibrate basic clinical, laboratory and medical research equipment.

    Typical** **Tasks:

    + Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repairelectronic,electromechanical,pneumaticand hydraulic device malfunctions to thesystem,device, assembly orcomponent level as needed to best meettheclinical andfinancialneedsofthecustomer.

    + Repair or replace defective patient cables, probes, or other accessories.

    + Perform preventative maintenance by cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, calibrating, and verifying performance and electrical safety testing.

    + Document equipmentinspections,repairsandfailuresindatabase.

    + Confer withfaculty,staff,healthcareproviders,laboratorystaff, students, vendorsandmanagement to resolveequipmentproblems.

    + Provide technicalassistanceandinstructionon equipmentoperationandmaintenance to clinicalandlaboratorypersonnel.

    + andoverseethird-partyrepairs as necessary.

    + Assist Senior BMETs in performance of their duties.

    + May perform repairs on life support equipment under emergent conditions.

    + Drive state vehicles to service equipment at off-campus locations.

    + Fabricate customdevices, cables andaccessories.

    + Evaluate, makerecommendations andapprovedevicesforuseonhumansubjects.

    + Evaluate medicalequipmentinvolvedinunusualincidents.

    + Other related duties as assigned

    Typical** **Equipment** **Serviced:

    + Infusion devices, clinicalthermometers,patientscales,patientwarmers,electrocardiographs,vitalsignsmonitors,oto/ophthalmoscopes,rigid & flexibleendoscopes,incubators,centrifuges, mixers, rockers, etc.

    Typical** **Tools** **Used:

    + Basic hand tools such as pliers, wrenches, screwdrivers, wire strippers, etc.

    + Power tools such as power screwdrivers, drills, soldering irons, etc.

    + Electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, thermometers, function generators and power supplies.

    + Specialized test equipment such as electrical safety analyzers, patient simulators, device specific test jigs and diagnostic software.

    + Software applications including manufacturer’s service tools, computerized maintenance management systems, databases, dashboards, spreadsheets and other metrics based monitoring systems.

    + Specialized equipment to inspect rigid and flexible endoscopes such as leak testers, magnifiers, borescopes and video capture equipment.

    + Demonstrate strong communication skills and ability to follow written and verbal instructions and procedures.

    + Serve as a representative of the SI to both internal and external customers.

    + Demonstrate basic computer literacy including ability to use: Microsoft Office - Word, Excel, Access and Outlook, voicemail and email, internet browsers and search engines, one or more Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), such as TMA, Maximo, or TMS.

    + Demonstrate familiarity with terminology and concepts related to servicing medical and laboratory equipment and be able to effectively communicate these concepts to coworkers and customers.

    Working** **Conditions:

    + Generally good working conditions. Possible hazards include exposure to electrical shock, ionizing radiation, chemicals and chemical fumes, high-pressure gasses, infectious diseases, and other hazards encountered in clinical and laboratory settings. Protective clothing and equipment may be required in certain environments such as sterile operating rooms, animal care areas and Biosafety Level 3 laboratories.

    + Constant reaching out, talking, and hearing.

    + Frequent standing, walking, and grasping.

    + Occasional sitting, bending, stooping, turning, twisting, bending neck, kneeling, squatting, climbing, wrist turning, pinching, fine manipulation, keyboarding, operating hand controls, operating foot controls, and driving University vehicle.

    Conditions of Employment:

    + Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM -- may include occasional overtime, weekend or shifted hours as dictated by customer needs.

    + Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

    + Must be able to lift/move at least 50 lbs.

    Supervision:

    + Reports to the BMET Supervisor

    + Receives daily work assignments and training from Senior BMETs.

    + May direct the work of others under limited circumstances.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    An Associate's Degree in Biomedical Technology

    OR

    Equivalent education/experience

    OR

    Certification by the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) as a candidate

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $73,356.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $104,988.00 annual
