    Job Summary and Responsibilities

    J** **OB** **S** **UMMARY** **/ P** **URPOSE

    Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, performs a variety of activities related to prescription processing and daily pharmacy operations workflow. Works in a highly regulated environment and must take care to abide by all state and federal regulations that relate to the practice of pharmacy including record keeping and infection prevention standards and will work in accordance with CommonSpirit Health policies and procedures. Pharmacy technicians are responsible for prescription data entry, insurance billing, preparation and filling of prescription medications, cashiering/customer service duties, and accurately performing pharmaceutical calculations, reconstitution and compounding of oral and topical dosage forms (if applicable). Inventory/stocking tasks for controlled and

     

    non-controlled medications along with tracking orders and performing routine clerical/administrative tasks may be required in lieu of a pharmacy coordinator and/or pharmacy buyer.

    E** **SSENTIAL** **K** **EY** **J** **OB** **R** **ESPONSIBILITIES

    1. Contributes to the department’s safe and accurate operations by prioritizing and organizing daily work for optimal operations of pharmacy.

    2. Participates in the on-boarding of new technicians.

    1. Answers telephones, screens phone calls/orders.

    2. Under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, receives and enters prescriptions into the pharmacy management system.

    3. Verifies information on prescriptions for accuracy and provides notification to pharmacists for possible errors and drug/allergy contraindications.

    4. Identifies possible medication/prescription errors. Discusses error(s) with pharmacist on staff and PIC. Documents error in system-utilized error reporting tool.

    5. Conducts prescription order processing to include packaging, reconstituting, and compounding/flavoring (if applicable).

    6. Distributes medication to the patient/customer and collects payment; performs cashiering duties.

    7. As the front line to all retail pharmacy customers, must present a professional, helpful, pleasant demeanor, showing respect in all patient/customer, coworker, and health care professional interactions.

    8. Captures information and charges for purposes of billing third party payers; reconciles billing and administration records. Will contact provider office if medication is not covered or prior authorization is needed

    9. Complies with federal state laws pertaining to pharmacy, including differing counseling requirements by state, HIPAA procedures and policies, etc

    10. Operates and maintains automated dispensing devices and may problem solve for operation and maintenance of all automated systems in the Pharmacy.

    11. Effective time management skills are critical to reprioritize work.

    12. Must demonstrate initiative and be willing to work as a cohesive member of a team.

    13. Performs administrative support functions for pharmacy operations, including filing.

    14. Will ensure confidentiality of patient and other hospital information.

    15. Tracks medication and supply orders and stocks and assists in keeping inventory at acceptable levels for patient care

    Job Requirements

    Required Education and Experience:

    High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    One year of retail pharmacy experience or equivalent

    Required Licensure and Certifications:

    Registered Pharmacy Tech in the state in which the employee works as required by state law PHARMTECH:KY

    Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Training:

    Knowledge of the standards, techniques and tools relating to pharmaceutical patient care.

     

    Knowledge of the regulatory requirements applicable to pharmaceutical patient care.

     

    Knowledge of mathematical functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, basic algebra and calculations.

     

    Ability to mix oral powders and compounded drugs if llowed by state law.

     

    Ability to use office equipment and automated systems/applications/software at an acceptable level.

     

    Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as required by the duties of the position

    Pay Range

    $16.83 - $23.77 /hour
