    School Counselor – Juvenile Court School Program (LACOE)

     

    Pay Rate: $40-$45 hourly, benefits available

     

    Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:15 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (Thursdays end at 12:00 p.m.)

     

    Lunch: 60 minutes daily

     

    Amergis is seeking a dedicated School Counselor to support students enrolled in the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Juvenile Court School Program located within juvenile detention facilities in San Dimas or La Verne, California.

     

    This role involves providing academic, social-emotional, and behavioral counseling to students ages 12–19 who are currently detained. The counselor will collaborate with LACOE educators, probation staff, and mental health professionals to foster a safe, supportive, and trauma-informed learning environment that promotes rehabilitation and personal growth.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide individual and group counseling focused on academic achievement, emotional regulation, social skills, and positive behavior.

    • Support transition planning, including credit recovery, high school completion, and reentry to community schools or career pathways.

    • Implement behavioral and social-emotional interventions aligned with LACOE and facility policies.

    • Conduct student needs assessments and refer to appropriate school, county, or community-based services.

    • Collaborate with teachers, probation officers, and multidisciplinary staff to address student needs and maintain consistent behavioral expectations.

    • Participate in crisis intervention, conflict resolution, and restorative practices as part of the facility’s support team.

    • Maintain confidential records, case notes, and reports in compliance with educational and facility standards.

    • Attend required staff meetings, professional development, and training in trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • Prior experience working with at-risk, adjudicated, or behaviorally challenged youth.

    • Ability to build rapport and foster trust with students from diverse backgrounds.

    • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and documentation skills.

    Preferred:

    • Experience in a juvenile detention or alternative education setting.

    • Knowledge of restorative justice practices, trauma-informed care, and crisis intervention strategies.

    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are highly desirable.

    Work Environment

     

    This position is based within a secure juvenile detention facility operated by Los Angeles County. Counselors work directly with detained youth in classrooms or counseling offices. Comprehensive safety training and orientation will be provided.
