    Construction Inspector

    Job Description

    We are seeking 10 dedicated Construction Inspectors to support a major expansion project. This is an incredible opportunity to work on the largest highway construction project in Virginia's history, the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion. The project aims to widen the current four-lane segments along nearly ten miles of the I-64 corridor in Norfolk and Hampton, with new twin tunnels across the harbor. This transformative undertaking will increase capacity, ease major congestion, and enhance travel time reliability.

    Responsibilities

    + Perform quality control for VDOT Roadway construction, ensuring compliance with contract specifications for soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregate testing.

    + Carry out materials testing such as nuclear gauge soil and aggregate density and assess concrete deliveries according to VDOT and ACI standards.

    + Verify construction compliance with drawings, VDOT specifications, standards, special provisions, and contract documents.

    + Monitor and observe fieldwork, including excavations, storm drain piping installation, drainage facilities, concrete placement, and road surfaces, under supervision.

    + Advise supervisors and contractor foremen of non-conforming field tests.

    + Record daily production and test results and complete daily reports with VDOT materials testing forms.

    + Receive materials delivery tickets for compliance and submission to contractors.

    + Take assignments and direction from Quality Control Lead Management and Senior Inspectors.

    + Ensure all tasks adhere to project scope, schedule, and budget, and review all work for completeness and accuracy.

    Essential Skills

    + Experience in transportation, soils testing, construction, aggregate testing, asphalt, and construction inspection.

    + Familiarity with OSHA, ACI standards, concrete testing, and inspection.

    + Ability to accurately record and report daily forms per project requirements.

    + Effective communication skills with the ability to resolve problems efficiently.

    + Understanding of industry standards and client requirements for projects.

     

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

     

    + At least one certification if no degree, such as Asphalt Field Level 1 or 2, Asphalt Plant Level 1 or 2, Soils and Aggregates, VDOT Concrete, ACI Concrete Field Testing, WACEL Concrete Level I, or NICET Construction Materials testing.

    + A degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field is preferred.

    + 0-2+ years of experience, with experience working outdoors and in various environmental conditions.

    + Active ACI Certification or experience in soils and aggregate or concrete testing is a plus.

    + Ability to work night shifts and weekends with prior notice, with additional compensation.

     

    Work Environment

     

    + The position is field-based, involving work outdoors at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel site.

    + Inspectors may be required to work night shifts and weekends, with appropriate compensation for night shifts.

    + A company vehicle and gas card are provided, along with opportunities for overtime.

    + Company-paid certifications and pay raises for acquired certifications are offered.

    This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Virginia Beach, VA.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $38.00/hr.
