    This job description is for the part-time Telecommunications Tech 1 position in the State Warning Point.

     

    Telecommunications Tech 1

     

    Advertised Salary $17.00/hr

    Description:

    As part of the Office of the Governor, the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) coordinate the state’s preparedness, response, and recovery efforts to disasters under the authority of the Emergency Management Act of 1981.

     

    GEMA/HS works with local, state, and federal governments, in partnership with the private sector and faith-based community, to prevent and respond to natural and man-made emergencies.

     

    In addition, GEMA/HS employees are on 24-hour call statewide to assist local authorities when disaster strikes.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    Under general supervision, receive and disseminates emergency and non-emergency information to and from state and federal partners, responders, local governments, and other entities as required. Operates a variety of voice and data communications equipment and systems including radio, telephone, satellite phone, computer and other specialized telecommunications equipment, notification systems, and computer applications.

     

    Telecommunications Tech 1 coordinates voice and data communication traffic within the State Warning Point (SWP) for GEMA/HS according to established federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

    Duties of Telecommunications Tech 1 include, but are not limited to:

    • Performing assigned communications functions for GEMA/HS, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and other agencies as required.

    • Understanding and following all directives, policies, protocols, and checklists.

    • Actively working as part of a cohesive team on assigned shifts, across all shifts and throughout GEMA/HS to deliver excellent customer service to the public and all who interact with the SWP.

    • Sending, receiving, relaying, monitoring, logging, recording (voice), reporting and interpreting emergency and non-emergency information from various information sources including, but not limited to: the State’s electronic crisis information management system (WebEOC), resource lists, checklists, GEMA/HS staff, the National Weather Service, and other agencies, organizations and sources.

    • Providing professional, courteous assistance using clear and concise speech over the phone, radio and through all other means of communication, both verbal and written.

    • Performing all administrative duties necessary for the operation of the SWP.

    • Maintains accountability and physical security of assigned computers, communications devices, and credentials in the workplace, at home and while in transit.

    • Ensures the readiness of all assigned computers and communications devices, required updates, logons, etc. Reports deficiencies in a timely manner.

    • Adheres to all health safety and workplace safety protocols.

    • Safeguards sensitive operational information and activities.

     

    THE PART TIME TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECH 1 FOR WHICH THIS OFFERING IS BEING MADE WILL NORMALLY WORK 20 HOURS A WEEK ON A SCHEDULE SET BY THE SWP MANAGER OR A SWP WATCH SUPERVISOR. SCHEDULE AND HOURS INCREASE MAY VARY DEPENDING ON LAST MINUTE UNFORESEEN CRITICAL SHIFT COVERAGE, INCREASED UNMANAGEABLE PHONE CALL VOLUME DUE TO AN INCIDENT OR DISASTER RESPONSE.

     

    PERSONS SELECTED FOR THIS PART-TIME POSITION WILL RECEIVE NO STATE BENEFITS.

    POSITION SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    Availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and irregular schedules,

    AND

    Ability to telework, and agreeing to and following the GEMA/HS Standard Operating Procedures for teleworking,

    AND

    Ability and general knowledge to set up and teardown state issued computer home workstation and deploy to alternate work site,

    AND

    Availability to report for work on short notice,

    AND

    Ability to travel overnight as required.

    AND

    Ability to communicate effectively and must be able to multi-task,

    AND

    Ability to remain calm and communicate precisely and clearly in emergencies / stressful situations,

    AND

    Ability to periodically check and return calls using state issue cellphone within 3 hours.

    AND

    Ability to assess and comprehend constituent needs and public safety requirements, and to apply appropriate decision-making, procedures, and escalations as situations arise.

    AND

    Ability to physically and safely load, carry, deploy, and employ workstation equipment (approximately 20 pounds).

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

    The selected candidate will be required to pass a background investigation as a condition of employment. Items that may be examined in a background check include but are not limited to credit records, criminal records, education records, past employers, military records, state licensing/certification records, and driving records.

    High school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of experience in customer service interacting with the public or Communication / Notification Center experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Completion of an associate’s degree or higher in any area of study from an accredited college or university.

    • Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council Certification as a Basic Communications Officer.

    • Experience effectively using multiple technology applications to complete assignments.

    • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office and Office 365 to include Word, Excel, and Outlook.

     

    Proficiency in operating radio and data communications equipment.

     

    High school diploma/GED and six (6) months of experience in customer service or providing information to the public.
