    + Bachelor’s degree with 3 or more years of related experience

    + Experience with academic advising and academic degree programs

    + Current Texas State University employee

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in Higher Education, Social Work, Counseling, or field related to social work

    + Experience with academic advising, professional advising, and mentoring of post-bachelor’s students.

    + Familiarity with social work degree requirements and accreditation standards for the School of Social Work (e.g., CSWE )

    + Familiarity and experience with student data software and systems used at Texas State University (e.g., Canvas, Banner, DegreeWorks)

    + Experience with website creation, maintenance, and editing

    Job Description

    The Program Specialist in the School of Social Work supports students (especially graduate students) through academic advising, professional development, and student engagement. This role ensures students receive the academic guidance for resources needed to complete their degree requirements. The Program Specialist collaborates with faculty and staff to improve student retention, assist in course scheduling, streamline advising services, and enhance the overall education experience.

    Job Duties

    + Provide academic advising and degree planning for students, especially graduate students

    + Monitor academic progress, probation, and graduation milestones

    + Assist with student recruitment, admissions, and orientation

    + Create academic plans (e.g., for those off-sequence, financial aid appeals)

    + Maintain accurate advising records and degree audits

    + Track student data for reporting and accreditation (e.g., CSWE )

    + Support course scheduling, registration, and overrides for the school

    + Manage advising tools including Canvas sites, student databases, and handbooks

    + Participate in committees and collaborate across departments

    + Maintain the website for the School of Social Work

    + Support the mission of the School of Social Work
