This is an internal recruitment only for current qualified classified City of Reno Employees
The ideal candidate in this position will perform basic and routine tasks in the maintenance, repair, and modification of City buildings, facilities, and related infrastructure. They will also be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, and servicing systems such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry, while ensuring all work complies with applicable codes, safety standards, and departmental procedures. A successful candidate in this position will work independently in carrying out assigned tasks and contribute to the safe and effective operation of City facilities.

Examples of Essential Functions
+ Assists skilled and semi-skilled staff with the maintenance and repair of City buildings, facilities, and grounds.
+ Prepares, cleans, and maintains work areas following maintenance, repair, or construction activities.
+ Moves, loads, and delivers equipment, supplies, tools, and bulk materials using appropriate lifting methods.
+ Installs, adjusts, and disassembles office furniture, fixtures, and modular components as directed.
+ Performs routine facility tasks including replacing light bulbs, batteries, ceiling tiles, and door alarms.
+ Prepares surfaces for painting and flooring; applies paint, stain, and finishes to complete basic touch-ups.
+ Assists with minor carpentry, tiling, and flooring work including replacing baseboards and tiles.
+ Uses mobile or computerized systems to document completed work, input service data, and access infrastructure information.
+ Escorts contractors in secured or restricted areas and provides general facility information as needed.
+ Performs janitorial and grounds duties to support cleanliness and upkeep of assigned areas.
+ Tests and treats water in pools and splash pads to maintain safe chemical balance and remove debris.
+ Operates light-duty vehicles and equipment such as lift gates, scissor lifts, and forklifts following training.
+ Assists with basic inspections of facilities or grounds and reports findings to appropriate staff.
+ Responds to service requests and interacts with employees and the public in a courteous and professional manner.
+ Performs other non-essential duties as assigned. These may include marginal, incidental, or minimal tasks that can be redistributed if needed.
Minimum Qualifications
The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application.
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent.
Experience:
Four years of facilities maintenance experience including some experience in a skilled trade area such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, fabrication, or HVAC.
OR
Four years of combined experience within the maintenance worker job series in the Sewer or Streets division at the City of Reno including two years at the Maintenance Worker II level or higher.
License:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Requirements of the Position:
+ OSHA 10-hour certification is required within 15 days of hire.
+ All required certifications/trainings as mandated by state and federal laws, or as required by the City, must be obtained and maintained as a condition of continued employment.

Examination Process:
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and pass the examination for this position to be eligible for hire. The examination will consist of online assessments which includes a Cognitive Abilities Test and an Employee Personality Profile; along with a Training and Experience evaluation (T&E) weighted as follows:
+ Training & Experience Evaluation (T&E) = 70%

Online Assessment Details:

Training and Experience Evaluation (T&E) Details:
The T&E examination consists of a Supplemental Questionnaire. The questions may be viewed online under the tab marked"QUESTIONS" on the job announcement page. The T&E must be submitted online at the time of application.

Employee/Veteran Preference in the Event of Tie Scores:
Promotional Examinations (Rule VIII, Section 7):
If two or more employees earn the same final score (including seniority points), veterans’ preference will be applied if any of the tied employees have submitted proof of an honorable military discharge. This preference is only used to break ties. If a tie still remains, it will be broken based on seniority in the current classification. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application.

The final ranking will include the applicable seniority points added to the overall grade of the examination process. For each full year of continuous service completed, 0.2 points will be added up to a maximum of ten (10) years... 2 points will be the maximum.
Appointment and Certification:
Appointments to positions in the City's Civil Service system are made on the basis of examination. Scores resulting from a competitive examination are used in determining a person's rank on an eligible register. The department may hire any of the persons referred. The names of those persons not hired may be considered when the next vacancy occurs, for as long as that register is viable.
