UPMC Hamot is hiring a Patient Care Technician to join our Labor & Delivery team!
This position is full-time, rotating day/night shifts. Weekend coverage required.
_Title and Salary will be determined based upon education and experience._
Overview: The Patient Care Technician plays a dual role in supporting the Labor and Delivery unit. They function as a Unit Secretary; they manage administrative tasks such as answering phones, coordinating patient flow, scheduling patients, and creating new charts. As a Patient Care Technician, they assist with some patient care, stocking, specimen labeling, and room preparation. This combined role helps maintain efficiency, supports clinical staff, and enhances the overall patient experience during labor and delivery.
Responsibilities:
+ Provides patient care, assists with procedures and daily living activities.
+ Supports physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.
+ Reports patient status changes and gives feedback to RN.
+ Performs core nursing assistant tasks: ADLs, blood glucose checks, weights, vital signs, I\&O, specimen collection, Foley care.
+ Completes at least four advanced tasks: phlebotomy, 12-lead EKG, simple dressing, Foley removal, point-of-care testing, bladder scan, straight catheter, IV removal.
+ Reports equipment malfunctions and communicates effectively with other departments.
+ Responds to call lights, phones, passes meal trays, and transports patients.
+ Receives feedback constructively, identifies learning needs, and seeks assistance for prioritization.
+ Provides patient/family instruction under RN direction; applies and monitors restraints per protocol.
+ Maintains clear communication, respects cultural diversity, and promotes workplace safety.
+ Builds professional relationships, demonstrates accountability, enthusiasm, and commitment.
+ Adheres to all patient care and hospital policies, including safety and standard precautions.
+ Suggests and supports departmental changes, quality initiatives, and projects.
+ Documents accurately and timely in medical records; performs clerical tasks as needed.
+ Maintains competency in core responsibilities plus advanced skills as required (e.g., phlebotomy, IV removal, Foley removal, EKG, NG tube management).
+ Access to medications limited to distribution to nurse.

+ High school diploma or GED.
+ Must have one of the following:
+ 1 year of general healthcare experience.
+ 6 months as UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA with PCT competency achieved within 120 days of hire/transfer/promotion for those with less than 1 year of experience.
+ Enrollment in PT/OT/PA program or related healthcare training program with completion of at least one clinical rotation.
+ Completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field.
+ Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician class.
+ Successful completion of eRecord training.
+ Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or current enrollment in an EMT or Paramedic program preferred.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ ACLS preferred.
