**Description** At 1898 & Co., a part of Burns & McDonnell, we help our clients navigate the evolving financial landscape of the electric utility industry. Our Utility Finance & Rates team supports electric utilities by providing data-driven insights and strategic guidance on rate design, financial planning, regulatory strategy, and cost-of-service analysis. As part of Burns & McDonnell, we bring together deep industry expertise, analytical rigor, and a collaborative spirit to help our clients make informed decisions and achieve sustainable growth. We are seeking an Offering Director to lead, grow, and enhance our Electric Utility Finance & Rates consulting offering. This role will define and execute the go-to-market strategy, manage client engagements, and position 1898 & Co. as a trusted advisor in electric utility finance and rate strategy. The Offering Director will focus on profitable growth, team development, market differentiation, and delivering exceptional value to our clients while upholding the Burns & McDonnell culture, values, and mission.
What You’ll Do
Leadership & Team Development
+ Provide leadership to the Electric Utility Finance & Rates team; direct and coordinate assignments, review performance, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.
+ Support the recruitment, development, training, and retention of high-performing staff members with expertise in electric utility finance, economics, and rate design strategy.
+ Support performance evaluations and provide coaching, guidance, and professional development support to team members.
+ Promote 1898 & Co.’s culture, values, and mission while fostering collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
+ Interpret and communicate organizational goals and strategic direction to the team, ensuring alignment with company objectives.
+ Ensure adherence to QA/QC processes and compliance with company and client safety and quality standards.
Offering & Market Strategy
+ Define and implement the service strategy to deliver client value, grow the Electric Utility Finance & Rates offering, and expand market awareness.
+ Develop and maintain the go-to-market strategy based on industry trends, client needs, and regulatory changes within the utility sector.
+ Establish, communicate, and maintain accountability for financial performance and offering growth targets.
+ Develop new business plans, pricing strategies, and service positioning that differentiate 1898 & Co. in the marketplace.
+ Evaluate partnership, marketing, and sales opportunities to expand the offering and strengthen client relationships.
+ Monitor offering performance metrics and implement continuous improvements to enhance efficiency, quality, and client satisfaction.
Project & Resource Management
+ Oversee the execution of consulting engagements related to electric utility financial planning, rate design, cost-of-service studies, utility revenue requirement analyses, depreciation studies, and load forecasting.
+ Provide expert-level guidance and oversight on project scope, budget, schedule, and quality to ensure successful project delivery.
+ Coordinate project team workload and communicate staffing needs to leadership, ensuring optimal resource allocation across projects.
+ Ensure projects are executed in accordance with best practices, QA/QC standards, and compliance requirements.
+ Collaborate with project managers and analysts to evaluate project risks, manage budgets, and maintain alignment with client expectations.
+ Lead internal and external project risk reviews, contract management, and project reporting as needed.
+ Ensure financial targets, utilization goals, and performance metrics are met across the offering’s portfolio of work.
Business Development
+ Cultivate and strengthen relationships with clients, regulators, and industry partners to drive growth in Electric Utility Finance & Rates services.
+ Identify and pursue new opportunities with investor-owned utilities, electric cooperatives, and public power entities seeking financial and regulatory support.
+ Lead proposal development and submission efforts, including project planning, budgeting, and scheduling.
+ Collaborate with managing directors, business line leads, and proposal teams to develop and implement strategies for market expansion.
+ Represent 1898 & Co. at client meetings, conferences, and industry events to promote the firm’s thought leadership in utility finance and regulatory strategy.
+ Support the creation of intellectual capital, including white papers, presentations, and internal training related to financial and regulatory trends in the utility industry.
Preferred Skills & Experience
+ Proven experience in electric utility finance, rate design, or regulatory strategy within a consulting, utility, or regulatory environment.
+ Strong understanding of utility financial operations, revenue requirements, and cost-of-service methodologies.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead consulting engagements from inception through delivery, ensuring quality and profitability.
+ Experience developing and executing go-to-market strategies and business plans within the energy or utility consulting sector.
+ Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and financial modeling skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
+ Ability to communicate complex financial and regulatory concepts to executive and technical audiences.
+ Strong leadership and team development skills, including mentoring, coaching, and performance management.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, with advanced knowledge of Excel and financial modeling tools.
+ Experience collaborating with regulatory bodies, public utilities commissions, or similar oversight organizations.
+ Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and fostering a culture of excellence within a consulting environment.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor Degree in engineering, business, or related field from an accredited program and 13 years of relevant experience Required or
+ Applicable years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement. Required
+ Excellent business acumen with proven success managing consulting engagements.
+ Strong analytical skills with the ability to quickly and efficiently interpret large data sets.
+ Ability to uncover customer needs, develop recommendations and deliver them persuasively.
+ Expert facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem solving skills.
+ Strong understanding of financial concepts.
+ Excellent planning and analytical skills
+ Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
