    Position Summary

    RSI is recruiting for an Interpretive Specialistwho will bethefront-line, public engagement role at the Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management (LM) government owned, contractor operated, public use interpretive centers. Interpretive specialists engage the public with historical and scientific information and interpret the histories and current operations of LM sites through in-person engagement and virtual programs. Content generated contributes to presentations, displays, exhibits, and materials for the LM public website, publications, and social media.

    **Status:** Full-Time

    **FLSA:** Exempt

    **Hiring Range: $** 58,000.00 – 60,000.00 per year.(The anticipated starting salary is based on the posted minimum requirements for this position. The offered salary will be based upon the selected applicant’s education, training, and experience.)

     

    This position is required to travel 26-49% of the time.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    + Provide front-line interpretive services and site related information for public and private groups, visitors, partner groups, government, and non-government

    + Conduct historical, scientific, natural history, and operational (production and remediation era) research in ongoing efforts that contribute to site knowledge supporting public engagement, exhibits development, document production, and media.

    + Serve as project lead to develop project plans for site related interpretive projects. Includes temporary exhibits as well as planning, developing, and participating in on- and off-site programs, special events, outreach, and related projects.

    + Independently plan, develop, and host educational and interpretive lessons for public audiences. When working with schools – ensure alignment with state standards of education and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Includes writing program themes, lesson plans, and talking points, as well as preparing presentations and other content as needed.

    + Write and develop program themes, presentations, and talking points. Support the development of outreach publications, brochures, digital content, and other printed and electronic materials intended for distribution to the public. When delegated – serve as project lead for these tasks.

    + Support site activities conducted by community groups, external partners, federal clients, other government agencies, stakeholders, and regulators. Includes meeting room use, trail events, and similar.

    + Perform duties consistent with interpretive center operational plans, procedures, and policies.

    + Ensure the Center remains open to the public during regular business hours by staffing the front desk when needed. Includes fielding questions and providing tours.

    + Share information and work collaboratively throughout all levels of the LM/LMSP organization.

    + Provide all school and organized group scheduling coordination including phone, email, and written confirmations.

    + Capture, track, compile, and report on monthly site visitor attendance.

    + Maintain and organize program supplies and collaborate with administrative support to reorder supplies within budget scope.

    + Provide project support to museum collections program.

    + Review history and STEM projects for public audiences including written content, videos, social media posts, and design materials.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Required Education and Years of Relevant Experience

    + Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Education, History, Science, Communication, or related field.

    + Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience preferred.

    Licenses and Certifications

    + Valid Driver’s License

    + Certified Interpretive Guide certificate preferred

    Required Skills and Abilities

    + Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance.

    + Excellent and effective public speaking skills – Able to communicate complex information with diverse technical and nontechnical stakeholder groups in easily understandable and engaging formats and tailored to audiences.

    + Excellent audience engagement – able to serve a wide variety of audiences, including young children, teens, adults, and seniors. Includes addressing diversity and accessibly needs.

    + Schedule flexibility – able to work weekdays, weekends, and evenings.

    + Excellent time management – able to execute, follow through, and complete tasks in a timely manner.

    + High degree of ingenuity, flexibility, team orientation, collaboration, creativity, and innovation.

    + Understand and interpret site history, biology, chemistry, and similar technical content.

    + Successfully communicate complex information to diverse technical and nontechnical stakeholder groups.

    + Comfortable using computer technology including the Microsoft Windows operating system

    + Understand and adhere to federal and contractor regulations, policies, and procedures for safety, communication, and operations.

    + Perform work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions including temperatures below 32 degrees and above 90 degrees.

    + Hike to the top of the disposal cell while leading a group of visitors several times a day as assigned.

    Essential Physical Requirements

     

    Medium:Frequent squatting, bending, stooping, and kneeling. Occasional work on uneven surfaces. Lifting or exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly
