The Department of Community Standards and Student Conduct has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director Community Standards & Student Conduct to join their team.
POSITION SUMMARY
Community Standards and Student Conduct (CSSC) fosters a developmental approach to the behavioral and educational needs of UW students. Through a variety of approaches, CSSC strives to maximize individual student success while upholding community standards and advancing the University's values. The Associate Director has the primary responsibility for investigating alleged student misconduct (both on and off campus), adjudicating cases, and determining appropriate sanctions for students found responsible for violating the student conduct code. The Associate Director is responsible for the intake of cases submitted to the UWS student conduct central reporting form, referrals from Residence Life and the University of Washington Police Department, case evaluation, and assignment of student conduct cases for investigation to members of the CSSC team and College/School Conduct Officers. They are also responsible for receiving cases, assigning charges under the student conduct code (WAC 478-121), updating student records, and adhering to the unit's electronic record management policies. They will oversee the department’s completion of student conduct cases and regularly consult and support staff within CSSC and across campus, investigating reports of alleged misconduct.
The Associate Director will provide case management for students involved in the student conduct and behavioral intervention team processes. Working with the Director and the Assistant Director of Student Care, they will help to staff and support the behavioral intervention teams. They provide consultative support to faculty and staff working with students of concern or students who have allegedly violated the Student Conduct Code (WAC 478-121) or who are exhibiting concerning behaviors. They will assist in connecting students to campus resources for support.
The Associate Director is responsible for supervising the 2-3 Conduct Specialists and 2-3 Conduct Support Assistants (Graduate Student workers serving as Conduct Officers). Additionally, the Associate Director supervises the 1 Program Assistant by overseeing and supporting the administrative operations of the department by supervising the front desk staff, including one permanent classified staff member. They will create and maintain procedures for answering telephones, maintaining accurate records, and conducting general administrative functions in support of the work of the Department.
As a member of the CSSC Leadership team, the Associate Director assists the Director in developing and implementing strategic department goals and assists in overseeing the departmental goals of the CSSC team. The Associate Director acts for the Director in the Director’s absence and coordinates with the Assistant Director of Student Care as needed.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
The Associate Director position requires strong leadership and facilitation skills, along with experience supervising staff and directing the work of others. Additionally, this position requires knowledge of the trends in the field of student conduct, along with knowledge of student development theory and practice as applied to student conduct administration, case management, and behavioral intervention teams. This position interacts with a variety of campus partners, including faculty, staff, and students and requires a high level of computer competency as well as interpersonal skills. They must be able to manage competing tasks and prioritize work. They will create annual reports such as the Clery report. The job requires knowledge of Title IX, the Clery Act, and other federal and state impacts on the work of student conduct administration.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Case Management/Consultation with faculty, staff, and students
+ Conduct case intakes for all incoming academic and non-academic alleged misconduct reporting by campus constituents.
+ Utilize student development theory and practice in the student conduct process. Counsel students on an individual or group basis regarding behavioral, academic, substance abuse, safety, and emotional issues. Initiate referrals to the proper resource agencies on campus when appropriate.
+ Use computerized web-based data system technology to manage assigned student cases with a high level of attention to detail. Prepare disciplinary records for full hearing and administrative review processes, as necessary.
+ Serve as a resource and support to staff and faculty regarding student and classroom management issues, provide information regarding the Student Code of Conduct, and take the appropriate actions to resolve issues with faculty and staff.
+ Receive and process incident reports from across academic and administrative units. Refer cases to the appropriate office or department for the next steps. Assign charges to conduct-specific cases, assign cases to conduct officers, schedule interviews, and coordinate the follow-up of sanction completion. Provide oversight to CSSC staff for appropriate and timely administration of processes and procedures.
+ Maintain the confidentiality of student records and student conduct files in accordance with the University, state, and federal regulations.
Coordination with College/School Conduct Officers
+ Offer ongoing guidance and assistance to conduct officers across 16 colleges/schools, ensuring consistent application of the Student Code of Conduct and adherence to institutional policies.
+ Assist in the management of conduct cases that span multiple colleges/schools, ensuring thorough investigations and equitable resolutions.
+ Develop and deliver training programs for college/school conduct officers, enhancing their skills in case adjudication, policy interpretation, and effective sanctioning.
Coordination of Advocate Case Management System
+ Co-chair Advocate Steering Committee to ensure appropriate coordination and decision-making surrounding Advocate use, user permissions, and information sharing.
+ Overseeing the functionality, maintenance, and updates of the Advocate case management system campus-wide to ensure effective operations and campus partner coordination.
+ Ensuring accurate data entry, managing data integrity, and supporting assessment projects by generating reports for institutional analysis and/or decision-making.
+ Coordinate with the Client Manager from Symplicity Advocate on system updates, changes, and larger initiatives.
+ Coordinating MOUs with campus partners and Colleges/Schools
Staff Supervision
+ Provide direct supervision to 3-4 professional staff and 2-3 graduate student staff who primarily serve as conduct officers, offering regular feedback, case consultations/case adjudication, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities.
+ Support onboarding, training, and ongoing support of new team members to ensure consistency in practice and policy application.
+ Oversee administrative operations for the department and supervise front desk staff.
Student Conduct Hearings
+ Investigate and adjudicate alleged academic and behavioral violations of the Student Conduct Code (WAC 478-121). Conduct prompt, impartial, and thorough investigative interviews using the process and procedures in the Student Conduct Code. Determine and communicate administrative and educational student conduct sanctions where appropriate.
+ Manage student conduct cases requiring University Hearings, ensuring compliance with policies, procedural fairness, and due process. Support case preparation and facilitate resolutions outlined in the university’s Hearing Officer’s Initial Order.
+ Serve as a Respondent Resource to students accused of misconduct, including sexual misconduct, by explaining the processes and procedures involved in Student Conduct proceedings, discussing academic advocacy resources, and participating in meetings with students as their resource, as appropriate.
Departmental Leadership
+ Assist the Director with assessment projects within the Unit. Assist with the development of statistical and informational reports as requested.
+ Support the department in providing training, consultation, and guidance to the campus community regarding disruptive students, academic initiatives, the Student Conduct Code, and services of CSSC.
+ Collaborates with the Director and Assistant Director of Student Care to develop and implement strategic initiatives that enhance the CSSC team’s effectiveness and strengthen campus partnerships.
Behavioral Intervention Team Support
+ Evaluates new CARE and conducts cases and engages in appropriate follow-up from action items assigned.
+ Serve as a core member of the Behavioral Intervention Team, coordinating cases that require both CARE and Conduct responses to ensure a cohesive, student-centered approach.
+ Liaise with SafeCampus to support cases undergoing violence prevention or threat assessment processes, providing conduct-related insight and ensuring alignment with institutional policies and response protocols.
+ Contribute to behavioral risk assessments by providing relevant conduct history, policy context, and recommendations for appropriate interventions or sanctions.
Outreach, Education, and Campus Coordination
+ Remain informed of best practices in student conduct and student affairs. Remain up to date on the knowledge of laws and policies that affect the practice of student conduct administration. Share regularly with other members of the team.
+ Serve as a liaison to key campus partners—including Residential Life, Learning Technologies (Canvas), and other academic technology teams—to support information-sharing, incident resolution, and coordinated responses.
+ Collaborate with the Office of Civil Rights, Title IX, and Title VI to ensure alignment in handling intersecting cases and to support trauma-informed, equity-centered conduct practices.
+ Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to campus-wide training and educational initiatives that support student accountability, conflict resolution, and community standards.
+ Represent the CSSC office in campus committees and working groups to advocate for consistent, student-centered conduct processes across academic and administrative units.
University Service
+ Participate in service to the University by serving on Student Life and University-wide committees and task forces.
+ Participate in the review and revision of the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) and Student Conduct Code, providing subject matter expertise to ensure policies reflect current legal standards, institutional values, and best practices.
+ Foster strong working relationships with campus partners—including academic units, administrative offices, and shared governance bodies—to promote consistent application of conduct policies and holistic student support.
+ Represent the CSSC perspective in cross-campus initiatives aimed at improving student engagement, equity, and well-being.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Master’s Degree in Higher Education/Student Development/Counseling or equivalent.
+ 3 to 5 years of experience adjudicating student conduct either through Residence Life experience or a University conduct process.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
+ Knowledge of student development theory and ability to translate theory to practice in a conduct setting.
+ Demonstrated leadership and facilitation of teams.
+ Responsibilities for supervising full time staff.
+ Five years of work in a university-level conduct office as a hearing officer, experience working with faculty and staff, and ability to navigate complex systems.
+ Experience coordinating Symplicity’s Advocate case management system.
+ Knowledge of behavioral intervention teams, training in Clery and Title IX.
Compensation, Benefits and Position Details
Pay Range Minimum:
$81,996.00 annual
