    Description

    Senior Community Services Assistant-Maternal Child Health Educator

     

    Under general supervision, performs difficult and complex duties related to education, outreach and supportive services in program design to improve the mental, physical, and financial health of the citizens of Detroit; and participates in research, curriculum development, and meaningful collaborations.

     

    Examples of Duties

     

    + Assesses and monitors community groups to determine significant community health problems.

    + Researches and develops health education intervention strategies to aid in combating specific community health problems.

    + Implement health education programs based on appropriate methods and strategies.

    + Evaluates the appropriateness of materials and techniques employed in implementing health education programs.

    + Evaluates the effectiveness of health education programs based on comparisons of results to previous and/or similar programs.

    + Provides resource information and health education material upon request to schools, community groups and outside agencies.

    + Trains volunteers in community groups, school staff and department personnel in developing and implementing health education projects.

    + Prepares materials such as pamphlets, flyers, and brochures used to publicize health programs in the assigned area, and for use as educational devices in specific programs.

    + Operates a variety of audio-visual equipment in the implementation of health education projects and classroom situations.

    + Prepares periodic and special reports as required.

    + Plans and directs research projects, such as focus groups, surveys, interviews, etc.; prepares reports on findings and makes appropriate recommendations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Qualifications (required):

    Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences, education, psychology, guidance and counseling or related field.

     

    One (1) year of recent experience as a supervisor, preferably in a social, economic or community development program.

     

    Three (3) years of experience in case work, group work, individual and group counseling and guidance, social research or community or public relations.

    Preferred:

    + Three (3) years of experience in health education, group work, social research or community or public relations.

    + A graduate degree in public health education

     

    Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be substituted to meet the education and experience requirements of this position.

    Evaluation Plan

     

    + Interview: 70%

    + Evaluation of Training, Experience & Personal Qualifications: 30%

    + Total of Interview and Evaluation T.E.P: 100%

    Additional points may be awarded for:

    + Veteran Points: 0 – 15 points

    RETIREMENT BENEFITS

    City Employees Retirement System

    As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

     

    • Completion of thirty (30) years of service;

     

    - At age sixty (60) if you have at least ten (10) years of service, or

     

    - At age sixty-five (65) with eight (8) years of service.

     

    • In the event of disability, other eligibility rules apply);

     

    - An early, actuarially reduced, retirement is offered after you have attained at least twenty-five (25) years of service;

     

    • Employees are vested after ten (10) years of service, regardless of age.
