    About Medical Services- Pathology (Laboratory)

     

    This work unit exists to maintain essential laboratory services that are available 24/7 to meet the customer needs and aid in the diagnosis and continuous treatment of patients at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo (CMHHIP). This includes on-site comprehensive laboratory diagnostic testing in the following speciality areas: Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Syphilis Serology, General Immunology, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis, Endocrinology, Toxicology, and Hematology. This work unit provides a wide range of laboratory procedures, including but not limited to: routine monitoring, medication levels, compliance testing, and STAT services. High-quality test results for methods and equipment are essential in providing the utmost care. CMHHIP Laboratory is nationally accredited by The Joint Commission and maintains a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) Certificate of Accreditation (COA). The Laboratory concentrates on operational systems critical to the safety and quality of patient care through the accuracy of test results, which ensures accurate patient diagnosis. Laboratory Services are provided to the following Colorado Health Agencies, including: Office of Civil and Forensic Mental Health (OCFMH) and Forensic Community-Based Services (FCBS).

    Description of Job

    You are required to work at your assigned work location during your scheduled work times.

    About the Position:

    This position serves as an individual contributor for Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine at CMHHIP. This position oversees the essential functions of one or more of the following areas: Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Syphilis Serology, General Immunology, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis, Endocrinology, Toxicology, or Hematology and is responsible for the day-to–day operation of specimen collection, specimen processing, test performance, and reporting of test results in all major sections of the Laboratory. This position is expected to follow all laboratory-specific policies and procedures as defined in the department standard operating procedures. Duties in this position include:

    Clinical Activities:

    + performs complex analytical testing in the areas of waived, moderate, and high complexity testing on a daily basis independently in the following work areas: Bacteriology, Mycology, Parasitology, Virology, Syphilis Serology, General Immunology, Routine Chemistry, Urinalysis, Endocrinology, Toxicology, and Hematology

    + required to perform phlebotomy procedures for patients throughout the assigned shift and specimen collection services for the monitoring of compliance for both inpatients and outpatients

    + Aid in scheduling, prioritization, and monitoring of patients’ blood collection, randomized compliance systems set forth by ordering providers

    + acts as part of a rotation for after-hours on-call status, and responds quickly to emergency (STAT) specimen collection both during assigned shifts and during on-call status

    + performs all duties assigned by the Laboratory Medical Director as defined by CLIA regulations, as personnel who meet the regulatory qualifications for their defined roles

    Quality Management and Quality Assurance:

    + follow all developed processes and procedures that are defined by the unit's Quality Control and Quality Assurance (QC/QA) Program

    + resolve any QC/QA problems to ensure the highest quality of care is provided to patients

    + meet all regulatory agency requirements mandated by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act 1988 (CLIA–88) and The Joint Commission

    + review and interpret test results and quality control data to determine accuracy, precision, and reliability of patient data rendered

    Equipment Management and Methodology:

    + ensure that diagnostic equipment, instruments, and test systems are operating properly

    + troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain highly complex automated laboratory equipment to ensure reliability and availability of critical test procedures 24 hours a day, 7 days a week

    Information Management:

    + monitor the Behavioral Electronic Healthcare Record (BEHR) system and ensure its proper functioning in conjunction with laboratory instrumentation, testing, and interfacing

    Other Duties as Assigned

    + responsible for performance of assigned tasks and duties within the scope of practice for this position that does not fall within the realm of other duty statements

     

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    Special Qualifications:

    This is a CLIA regulated lab, and applicants must meet CLIA educational requirements to be considered for this role. Candidates must meet one of the following education and experience paths: Hold a bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, plus at least 2 years of laboratory training or experience; for nonwaived testing, this experience must be in the designated specialty or subspecialty areas of service.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Experience Only:

    Five (5) yearsof relevant experience in an occupation related to the work assigned to this position

    OR

    Education and Experience:

    Education or a bachelor’s degree in chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution, plus experience to equalfive (5) years

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (cMLS)

    + knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and instrumentation

    + knowledge of laboratory quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) practices

    + Knowledge of chemical safety recommendations and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) interpretation and review

    + ability to analyze data, solve problems, and make critical decisions.

    + maintain A high degree of accuracy and attention to details

    + experience working with mental health patients

    + experience with venipunctures

    + experience with pre-analytical, post analytical and performing analytical testing on clinical samples

    + equipment maintenance skills (performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed)

    + excellent customer service skills

    + excellent problem solving and troubleshooting skills

    + excellent planning and organizing skills

    + excellent analytical skill

    + excellent critical thinking and problem solving skills

    + excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

    + experience with working on various laboratory instruments and equipment to include, but not limited too, routine calibration and maintenance following the standard operating procedures

    + familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and procedures

    + ability to self-motivate
